What is Nocturnal Enuresis ?
Nocturnal enuresis, commonly known as bedwetting, is the involuntary passing of urine during sleep in children aged 5 years and older. While it is common in young children, persistent bedwetting may require evaluation and treatment. It can be primary ( when the child dry at night ) or secondary ( when bedwetting starts after a dry period of at least 6 months).
Causes :
Delayed bladder maturity - The bladder is still developing control
Deep sleep pattern - The child may not wake up when the bladder is full
Hormonal imbalance - Low levels of antidiuretic hormone, which controls night time urine production
Genetic factors - Often runs in families
Urinary Tract Infections - may cause increased urination
Constipation - Full bowel can press on the bladder
Stress & Anxiety - Emotional factors can contribute
Underlying Medical Conditions - Such as diabetes or neurogenic bladder (rare).
Symptoms ?
Uncontrolled urination during sleep, at least twice a week
More frequent tbedwetting episodes when stressed or unwell
Occassional daytime urinary urgency or accidents
Increased thirst or frequent urination in some cases
Frequent urination ( more than 8 times a day )
Waking up at night to urinate ( Nocturia )
Solutions :
Reassurance & Patience - Most children outgrow bedwetting naturally
Bladder Training - Encouraging regular urination during the day and before bedtime
Fluid Management - Limiting fluid in the evening and avoiding caffeine
Bedwetting alarms - Helps train the child to wake up when the bladder is full
Medications ( if needed ) - to reduce nighttime urine production
Treating underlying conditions - If UTIs, constipation, or other medical issues are present
