Dr. Sen Liu is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Louisiana at Lafayette since 2023. He worked as a Postdoc scholar at Stanford University, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in 2021-2023, mentored by Dr. Christopher Tassone & Dr. Piero Pianetta (sponsor). At Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, he worked with colleagues developing novel capabilities to characterize in-situ laser additive manufacturing (AM) processes, including designing and building novel laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) systems, running experiments at synchrotron X-ray light-source, analyzing imaging and diffraction data with AI technologies and developing new 3D printable materials. He received his Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. degree from Colorado School of Mines in 2021, advised by Dr. Xiaoli Zhang & Dr. Aaron Stebner. He was affiliated with The Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies (ADAPT) center by conducting research on metal additive manufacturing, machine learning and in-situ AM process monitoring. Before this, he got Mechanical Engineering Master's and Bachelor's degrees from Wuhan University and Lanzhou University of Technology with a research background in mechanics and advanced manufacturing technologies. He has published almost 30 papers and is guest editor and peer-reviewer for renowned journals such as Additive Manufacturing, Acta Materialia, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, Materials, Journal of Manufacturing Processes, etc. His research won the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award, Dr. Rath Research Award (established by Dr. Bhakta Rath, a member of U.S. NAE), ASME ISPS Graduate Student Scholarship, IEEE InterMag Student Travel Award, etc.
