2024/05 We performed the world-first X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiment for laser 3D printing at Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) “L-10128 Initial Stage Nucleation Observation for Laser Additive Manufacturing” (Continuous 72 hours, 6 shifts, PI), to characterize initial stage nucleation and microstructure formation during laser melting process at ps-ns time and Angstrom length scales. Two PhD students were involved in the experiments and made significant contributions to Elog records and data analysis!

2023/10 Thank you to the president of Dixie Iron Works, Ltd., Gerard Danos, and MCHE department head Alan Barhorst, for making the academic-industry collaborative robotic metal 3D printing project real “Large format Metal Additive Manufacturing via Robots”. We are going to develop automatic robotic AM technologies for high-quality valve and pump production with reduced materials/energy consumption.
