Area: Laser/Arc-based additive manufacturing (AM), Metals, Processing science, In-situ monitoring and control, Robots for manufacturing, Machine learning/Generative AI, Digital twin for materials deposition
Vision: We explore novel manufacturing technologies, in-situ X-ray/sensor characterization, robotics, automation system, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to accelerate the design and manufacturing of advanced materials and AM functional structures. These innovations will help understand materials formation physics under energy beams and create novel materials, improve quality, reduce waste, and achieve a high level of automation for advanced manufacturing processes.
The main thrusts are (1) how to develop intelligent manufacturing and automation systems to meet the demands of future manufacturing; (2) how to improve alloy material “printability” under unpredictable manufacturing conditions with composition refinements and in-situ process control of energy-beam induced multiphysics; (3) how to reveal complex materials composition-process-structure-property relationships with limited experimental data using AI-based informatics.
University: UL Lafayette is designated by Carnegie R1 University – “Doctoral University - Very High Research Activity” (total 137 in US as of 2021). The largest enrollment university within the nine-campus University of Louisiana System. The College of Engineering has over 1600 students, and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in all engineering departments. ME department is the largest department in the College, with focus areas including renewable energy, manufacturing, robotics, materials and biomedical engineering.
Lafayette: Lafayette, LA is an exciting community within Louisiana's beautiful Cajun Country. It serves as the energy, financial, retail and medical center for South-Central Louisiana. Lafayette is located midway between New Orleans and Houston and is the heart of Louisiana's Cajuns region, and is one of Louisiana's fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
