The poster used for the launch of ZankoLine in July 2011, the Digital Transformation project for national university admission was a successful project by 97.3% measured by the number of students who successfully applied for academic year 2011/2012.
Upon assuming the position of Vice President of Scientific Affairs in early 2012, I recognized the need to prioritize the welfare and interests of the core stakeholders, the students, in order to propel the university forward. With this vision in mind, I spearheaded the implementation of a Student-Centred Learning (SCL) Strategy that positioned the well-being and success of students as the cornerstone of all our strategies and policies. While met with initial resistance from some colleagues in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), this transformative approach yielded remarkable outcomes, propelling the university to achieve global recognition and secure its position as the top-ranked university in KRI by 2015.
The Student-Centred Learning (SCL) Strategy revolves around the key principles of aspiration, innovation, and achievement. It is founded upon the belief that students should actively participate in co-creating their own unique educational experiences. Through this strategy, we strive to provide students with exciting opportunities that extend beyond the confines of the academic realm, enabling their personal growth and development. By fostering an environment that maximizes well-being, strengthens resilience, and broadens ambitions, we aim to empower students to transform into well-rounded individuals who are equipped to navigate the challenges of the future.
Central to the success of the Student-Centred Learning (SCL) Strategy is a true collaboration between students and staff. By embracing innovative and critical thinking, we have been able to create an educational environment that is driven by the core values of academic excellence. This collaboration ensures that students' voices are heard, their perspectives are valued, and their needs are met. It empowers them to actively engage in shaping their own educational journey and fosters a sense of ownership and pride in their academic achievements.
Through the implementation of the Student-Centred Learning (SCL) Strategy, we have witnessed a profound shift in our university community. Vernacular Architecture (VAR) in Kurdistan, known as "خانووسازی خۆماڵی لە کوردستان" in Kurdish, encompasses the exploration and examination of traditional, environmentally sustainable structures and residences that harmoniously blend with the natural landscape. Recognizing the significance of this field, I introduced the VAR course in 2013 as part of the 5th year Architectural Engineering program at Koya University. This pioneering initiative marked the first scholarly endeavor to investigate, research, and document the rich heritage of Kurdish vernacular architecture.
Throughout the course, we delved into the origins and development of towns and buildings in Kurdistan, where construction was primarily driven by the expertise and skills of local builders and the collective knowledge of the community. We explored the intrinsic relationship between the builder and their creation, emphasizing the craftsmanship and communal traditions that shaped the architectural landscape of these regions.
Our study focused on understanding the various factors that influenced the forms, materials, and techniques employed in the construction of vernacular homes in Kurdish communities. We examined the impact of cultural, geographical, and environmental elements on the architectural choices made by the builders. By analyzing these variables, we gained insight into how the local context shaped the design and construction of these dwellings, resulting in structures that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The VAR course provided a platform for students to explore and appreciate the unique architectural heritage of Kurdistan. Through research, discussions, and site visits, students developed a deeper understanding of the historical, cultural, and environmental significance of vernacular architecture in the region. By documenting and studying these traditional practices, we aimed to preserve and promote the appreciation of Kurdish architectural heritage for future generations.
To facilitate access to course materials and encourage further exploration, a dedicated website was established at http://sites.koyauniversity.org/var5038/. This online resource served as a hub for students and researchers to access valuable information, research findings, and relevant resources related to Kurdish vernacular architecture.
By introducing the VAR course and fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural and environmental aspects of traditional Kurdish architecture, we aimed to instill a sense of pride and appreciation for our architectural heritage. Through this educational initiative, we hoped to inspire future generations of architects and designers to draw upon the wisdom of the past, embracing sustainable and contextually relevant approaches to architecture in Kurdistan.
Upon assuming the position of Vice President of the University in early 2012, I embarked on a transformative journey to establish an all-inclusive, student-centered e-Smart Academic Community. Recognizing the importance of this strategy, I developed comprehensive three, five, and ten-year plans to shape the future of Koya University and position it as a global center of excellence for education and research.
The cornerstone of this strategy lies in fostering a culture of self-promotion among the academic community, where individual productivity and academic achievements serve as tangible measures of quality. By encouraging and supporting the academic pursuits of our faculty members, we enhance the university's reputation and standing in global rankings. This approach not only motivates individuals to excel, but also fosters a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility among all stakeholders.
Monitoring the progress of this initiative has been a top priority for me, and I have maintained close collaboration with the university to ensure its sustainable advancement. By continually assessing the effectiveness of the e-Smart Academic Community infrastructure, we strive to refine and improve its implementation. Additionally, we have actively shared the underlying concepts and strategies with other universities, promoting knowledge exchange and fostering collaboration within the academic community at large.
Central to this endeavor is the unwavering belief that when students are placed at the forefront of our educational endeavors, true meaning is infused into the pursuit of knowledge. By prioritizing the needs and aspirations of our students, we create an environment where education becomes a transformative experience. Through personalized support, comprehensive resources, and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, we empower students to reach their full potential and become active contributors to society.
The student-centered approach not only ensures academic success but also fosters holistic development, emphasizing personal growth, well-being, and resilience. By nurturing an inclusive and supportive academic community, we enable students to thrive in an environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and engagement with the world around them.
As we continue to embrace the principles of the e-Smart Academic Community, our vision of putting students first remains at the forefront of our efforts. By upholding this commitment, we aspire to create a transformative educational experience that prepares our students to excel in their chosen fields, contribute meaningfully to society, and become leaders in their respective domains. Experiences were shared with other universities.
When Students come first, the education will have true meaning
In February 2007, I had the privilege of presenting a significant project to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) aimed at preserving the environment and nature of Kurdistan. As the global political landscape grapples with the implications of the greenhouse effect and other environmental challenges, it becomes crucial for emerging countries to adapt their economic and political efforts in anticipation of the next 50 years. The success of these efforts heavily relies on education and raising awareness among the population.
One key initiative proposed in this project is the establishment of the Environmental Civil Security Guards, known as Sipay Parastin Jhínwar (SPJ). Members of the SPJ will be carefully selected and undergo training in parallel with their regular school activities. Through their involvement in various aspects of environmental issues and the exploration of potential solutions, SPJ members will become well-versed in the subject. They will also serve as ambassadors, actively disseminating knowledge and awareness within society.
The ultimate goal of the SPJ is to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship among the population, empowering individuals to actively contribute to environmental preservation. By equipping the younger generation with knowledge and instilling a deep appreciation for the natural world, we lay the foundation for sustainable practices and a more environmentally conscious society.
The SPJ project represents a proactive approach to environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of education and community engagement. By nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious citizens, we aim to create a lasting impact on the environment and ensure a harmonious coexistence between nature and human activities in Kurdistan.
Please click here to read the detailed project proposal, which outlines the comprehensive strategies and activities envisioned for the SPJ initiative.
In order to further enhance the implementation of the Student Center Strategy, I took a pioneering step in 2013 by spearheading the curriculum development process for the entire university. This groundbreaking initiative was designed to align the curriculum with market-driven learning outcomes, setting a new standard for the region. By establishing a clear and transparent contract between staff and students, communication and expectations were streamlined.
To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, the developed curriculum and related information were made available to all individuals with internet access from any location. This facilitated a seamless loop of information exchange between lectures, classes, and the intended learning outcomes. Students and staff were able to easily navigate the curriculum, understand the objectives, and actively engage in the learning process.
The success of this approach transcended the university and resonated across the region. Today, it is widely adopted as a best practice in curriculum development. One notable example of the implementation of this approach is the course on Vernacular Architecture in Kurdistan offered by the Department of Architectural Engineering. This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the unique architectural heritage of Kurdistan, integrating it with contemporary knowledge and skills in the field.
By embracing the Student Center Strategy and revolutionizing the curriculum development process, we have empowered students to actively participate in their educational journey. This approach fosters a dynamic and engaging learning environment that is responsive to the needs and aspirations of both students and the market. It is a testament to our commitment to providing quality education and preparing students for real-world challenges.
The widespread adoption of this approach validates its effectiveness in promoting student-centered education and enhancing the overall learning experience. I am proud to have played a pivotal role in introducing this innovative curriculum development process, which has made a lasting impact on the educational landscape of the region.

Join us on a transformative journey as we reimagine Erbil through the Green Sustainable Master Plan, a forward-looking initiative that places the city at the forefront of urban sustainability in the Middle East. This master plan merges environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, and innovative design to craft a thriving, eco-conscious metropolis that honours Erbil's deep Kurdish roots while pushing the boundaries of green urban living.
As the lead academic behind this visionary project, my mission is to shape Erbil into a model city of the future—one that seamlessly blends cutting-edge urban planning with a respect for its ancient heritage. A key aspect of the plan is the integration of Kurdish symbolism, most notably the iconic Kurdish Sun. Its 21 radiant rays reflect unity and resilience, providing a powerful metaphor for Erbil’s transformation into a sustainable city that embraces both tradition and innovation.
At the core of this strategy are urban spaces designed to harmonize with the environment. The master plan envisions sustainable infrastructure that can be admired from above, much like the world-renowned landmarks of the Great Wall of China or Spain’s Almeria Greenhouses. These bold, eco-friendly structures will not only serve as symbols of Erbil’s sustainable aspirations but also act as functional, energy-efficient components of the city.
Strategically located in Iraq's fertile landscape, Erbil is perfectly positioned to lead the region in green urban development. The master plan leverages this natural advantage, creating a city that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The design prioritizes the preservation of cultural landmarks, incorporates disaster-resilient features, and promotes green technologies that reduce carbon emissions and resource consumption.
Beyond sustainable infrastructure, my vision embraces the concept of a resilient and inclusive urban community. The master plan provides a balance of diverse housing, world-class educational institutions, essential public services, and abundant green spaces for recreation. This holistic approach aims to foster a high quality of life for Erbil’s residents while reducing the city’s overall ecological impact.
Erbil’s Green Sustainable Master Plan is not just an urban blueprint—it’s a pioneering model for green urbanism in the region. It showcases the power of collaborative, innovative thinking in shaping cities that are both sustainable and culturally vibrant. By integrating cultural preservation, disaster preparedness, and environmental sustainability, we are setting new benchmarks for urban planning that can inspire cities across the globe.
Through this ambitious plan, we aim to demonstrate that green urban development is both practical and essential for the future. Erbil’s transformation will serve as a beacon of sustainable progress, paving the way for a prosperous, eco-conscious future for cities everywhere. Let’s shape the future of Erbil and, in doing so, set a new standard for green living in cities worldwide.
In January 2020, during my tenure as President of Knowledge University, I spearheaded a groundbreaking initiative to introduce a postcode (zip code) system for the city of Erbil. This project was designed to solve a persistent challenge: the lack of international recognition for physical locations within the city. Official institutions often encountered obstacles when submitting applications to global platforms that required a valid, standardized local postcode.
Understanding the significance of having a globally accepted addressing system, I dedicated countless extra hours to develop and implement this much-needed solution. The introduction of the postcode system was a critical step in providing an official, reliable method for identifying and representing Erbil’s locations in international databases and applications.
This system not only streamlined the process for organizations and individuals needing to supply address details on the global stage but also improved the overall accuracy and accessibility of Erbil’s physical locations. It resolved long-standing issues with address validation and gave Erbil a recognized place on the international map.
If you are interested in learning more about the development and outcomes of this project, I would be happy to share additional insights. Feel free to reach out, and I’d be delighted to discuss how this initiative has strengthened the global visibility of Erbil’s addresses.
In 1993, driven by my ambitions in Computational Linguistics, I took the initiative to establish a linguistic research group. This endeavor laid the foundation for the Kurdish Academy of Language (KAL), the first nationwide academic platform dedicated to Kurdish linguistic studies. Through KAL, we aimed to promote a common standard electronic-friendly writing system called YEKGIRTÚ for all Kurdish dialects, enabling writing practices across various platforms at any given time.
The introduction of YEKGIRTÚ revolutionized the way Kurdish was written and disseminated, providing a unified approach to writing in different dialects. This breakthrough allowed me to create the first Kurdish textbook in the south Kurdish dialect, while also editing and converting well-known Kurdish textbooks in the Middle and North Kurdish dialects. These publications have been made available online, ensuring their accessibility to a wider audience.
The Kurdish Academy of Language remains committed to its original objectives, continuing to serve its visitors through KurdishAcademy.org. Our mission is to advocate for true language planning and promote the use of YEKGIRTÚ as a means to foster linguistic unity and standardization in the Kurdish language. This platform serves as a hub for language enthusiasts, researchers, and learners, supporting the advancement of Kurdish linguistic studies.
In my article "Nation-State building or language planning" published in 2010, I further highlighted the importance of language planning in the context of nation-state building. This article explores the significant role that language plays in shaping and preserving cultural identity, emphasizing the need for deliberate language planning efforts to ensure the development and vitality of Kurdish language and culture.
The Kurdish Academy of Language remains dedicated to its ongoing mission, promoting linguistic research, standardization, and language planning to nurture the rich linguistic heritage of the Kurdish people. We invite you to explore KurdishAcademy.org to learn more about our initiatives and access the resources available to further your understanding of Kurdish language and culture.
In 1993, I took the initiative to establish a groundbreaking Kurdish Language Platform, marking a significant milestone in the development of electronic resources for the Kurdish language. The primary objective of this initiative was to address the communication challenges arising from the existence of multiple Kurdish writing systems. To overcome this issue, I proposed the concept of a universal Kurdish alphabet that would enable Kurdish speakers to write effortlessly across different technological platforms.
The Universal Kurdish Alphabet sought to enhance the existing Latin-based Kurdish alphabet known as Bedir Xan. Through careful modifications and the introduction of new signs, the Unified Writing System aimed to ensure seamless communication and writing compatibility across all Kurdish dialects. These additional signs were carefully selected to maximize the versatility of Kurdish writing, allowing individuals to express themselves in their respective dialects without any limitations.
As part of this groundbreaking effort, I took on the task of rewriting renowned Kurdish textbooks in the new Universal Kurdish Writing System. These revised editions were then made available online, facilitating widespread access to standardized Kurdish educational materials. Furthermore, in 1998, I authored the first-ever Kurdish textbook specifically designed for the south Kurdish dialect, further contributing to the development and preservation of Kurdish language and culture.
The establishment of the Kurdish Language Platform and the introduction of the Unified Kurdish Alphabet have had a lasting impact on the accessibility and usability of the Kurdish language. Kurdish speakers now have the freedom to write and communicate in their dialects using a unified system that transcends technological barriers.
Through these initiatives, my aim was to empower Kurdish speakers to express themselves freely and effectively in their language, while fostering linguistic unity and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Kurdish people. The availability of online resources and the implementation of the Universal Kurdish Writing System have played a significant role in advancing Kurdish language education and promoting a standardized approach to Kurdish writing.
I am proud to have contributed to these pioneering efforts, and I remain committed to furthering the development and preservation of the Kurdish language for generations to come.

I invite all individuals who are passionate about Kurdish studies to join us in further enriching this invaluable resource (kurdistanica.com). Together, we can continue to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of the Kurdish people worldwide.
Since early 2001, I have been actively advocating for the establishment of a top-level domain (TLD) for Kurdistan. Recognizing the power and reach of the World Wide Web, I recognized the need for Kurdistan to have its own online presence and control over its internet services. Access to the internet has become increasingly localized and managed by local authorities, and having a dedicated TLD is crucial for the progress and development of any society.
Many countries around the world, as well as autonomous territories and regions, have their own TLD and Domain Name System (DNS). This allows them to have sovereignty and representation in the digital landscape. Even isolated islands with minimal populations have their own TLDs. In 2003, Palestine was granted its own DNS, further highlighting the importance and feasibility of such an endeavor.
It is evident that Kurdistan meets all the criteria of an autonomous region and is deserving of its own TLD. The application process for a TLD is not complicated, and there are clear guidelines and procedures in place. I have been actively maintaining a network dedicated to raising awareness about this issue and promoting the establishment of a Kurdish TLD.
I have published several articles on this topic, including "KRG to apply for a dot-ku (2001)" and "IT the Dilemma of Kurdish Language (2002)". These articles provide insights into the significance of having a dedicated TLD for Kurdistan and the potential impact it can have on the representation and promotion of Kurdish language and culture in the digital sphere.
To further support this cause, I have also established a Facebook community where individuals can join, engage in discussions, and show their support for the idea of a Kurdish TLD.
By advocating for a Kurdish TLD, we aim to ensure that Kurdistan has a distinct online identity and presence, aligned with its cultural, linguistic, and historical significance. Join us in supporting this cause and contributing to the realization of a Kurdish TLD for Kurdistan.
Since July 2012, I initiated and led a group dedicated to a field project aimed at digitally documenting all archaeological sites in Kurdistan. The primary objective was to make these valuable historical sites accessible to remote researchers worldwide. During our visits to various archaeological sites, we meticulously gathered information about their history, significance, and cultural context.
Through this project, we aimed to create a global network of researchers and archaeology enthusiasts interested in the rich heritage of Kurdistan. By digitally documenting the archaeological sites, we sought to preserve and share their knowledge and insights with a wider audience.
The project has received commendation for its efforts in producing high-quality and accurate documents. The digital records and documentation serve as valuable resources for researchers, scholars, and anyone interested in studying the archaeology and history of Kurdistan.
By making this information available remotely, we aimed to bridge geographical barriers and enable global researchers to explore and study these archaeological sites without physical presence. The project's success lies in its contribution to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge about Kurdistan's rich cultural heritage.
Through our collaborative efforts and the utilization of digital technologies, we have made significant strides in documenting and sharing the archaeological wealth of Kurdistan. The project continues to evolve, with ongoing documentation and expansion of the network to facilitate greater engagement and research opportunities for global archaeology enthusiasts. In 1996, I introduced the concept of KURO, a potential Kurdish currency, which was proposed years before the establishment of the Euro. The idea behind KURO was to create a currency that would symbolize the economic and financial independence of the Kurdish people.
The introduction of KURO aimed to address the unique economic needs and aspirations of the Kurdish population. It was a visionary initiative that sought to establish a currency that would serve as a symbol of Kurdish identity, unity, and self-determination.
While the implementation of KURO as an official currency did not materialize, the proposal itself played a significant role in raising awareness about the importance of economic autonomy for the Kurdish people. It sparked discussions and debates on the potential benefits and challenges of having a distinct currency for Kurdistan.
Although the Euro became the common currency for several European countries, the idea of KURO stands as a testament to the vision and determination to establish a currency that would represent the economic interests and aspirations of the Kurdish people.
The concept of KURO serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of economic empowerment and self-governance within the Kurdish community. It represents an important milestone in the history of Kurdish economic thought and continues to inspire discussions and explorations of financial autonomy.
In 2003, during the events surrounding Operation Iraqi Freedom, I embarked on an initiative to create a national passport for Kurdistan. This symbolic endeavor aimed to fulfill the aspirations of individuals like Mír Jeladet Badr Khan, who dreamed of possessing a passport representing the Republic of Kurdistan.
The passport served as a powerful symbol and motif, representing the yearnings and aspirations of a nation that had yet to attain official recognition as a sovereign state. It carried metaphorical resonance, embodying the collective identity and longing for a homeland among the Kurdish people.
Although the passport was created as a symbolic gesture and did not hold legal standing, its existence symbolized the deep desire for self-determination and recognition of the Kurdish nation. It was a manifestation of hope for a future where Kurdistan would be acknowledged as an independent entity, with its own legitimate passport.
The creation of the passport was a reflection of the Kurdish people's resilience and determination in the face of challenging circumstances. It served as a reminder that, despite the obstacles encountered on the path to nationhood, the Kurdish nation continued to strive for peace, stability, and the realization of its rightful place among the community of nations.
While the passport was a symbolic representation at the time, it carried the hope that, one day, the world would come to recognize and embrace the Kurdish people's aspirations for self-governance and statehood. It was a poignant reminder that the quest for peace and understanding should ultimately prevail over violence and conflict.
Although the journey towards achieving a recognized statehood continues, the existence of the symbolic passport underscores the Kurdish people's unwavering determination and serves as a beacon of hope for a future where their aspirations are realized on a global scale.
