Heart surgeon Dr Luis Leon retires in 2010. Now begins his new period as a sculptor. He assumes the fact that original thinking and creativeness are his leading qualities. He realizes that he needs to learn many new skills. For the next five years he learns ceramics, glass fusion, kiln fabrication, electric and gas ovens for metal and glass casting, bronze casting and lost wax, iron cutting and soldering. He does resins, fiberglass sculpture and sailboats, plus computer assisted design and metal cutting, laminated wood molding. Copper, silver, and bronze soldering, arc and tig welding. For one year he works as a junior craftsman in a bronze sulpture workshop. “It was like learning surgery all over again, from scrap”.
Novel sculptures in glass and resin or wood and metal begin to see the light, a rich mixture of newly acquired habilities, using fresh materials.
“This hard way is exactly how I will be ready to do my creative work once more”
