Teaching and promoting universal access are truly my passion. I have worked to research within my teaching practice and continually improve my approaches and teaching, especially in an online environment.
Universal design for learning (UDL) (CAST, Inc., 2020) consistently guides my course planning. I'm constantly analyzing how can I increase access for my students to effectively learn my content. UDL focuses on three main components, multiple means of representation -- how I share content, multiple means of engagement -- how I motivate students, and multiple means of expression -- how students demonstrate their learning.
I have been specifically focusing on student engagement through the use of personal connections and establishing a safe classroom community for all learners. I've found facilitating concrete experiences (Kolb, 1984) through projects and use of technology has helped students to apply their learning and clarify misconceptions. While facilitating these experiences, I model practices (Bandura, 1977) and share my experiences throughout my instruction.
Continually focusing on universal access and how I make my content accessible for my students to learn and implement is crucial to my teaching philosophy.
