Michael Rathke (MSc Applied Marine Conservation)
Michael is studying the fish communities associated with Ascophyllum nodosum beds in Ireland and the potential effects that seaweed harvesting might have on them. By analysing the gut contents of the fish we trapped he is being able to piece together the food webs in those important marine habitats.
Neve McCann (MScApplied Marine Conservation)
Neve's worked on the infaunal and undercanopy communities associated with Ascophyllum nodosum beds. Using two experimental sites in Kinvara and Roundstone, Neve is investigating the potential effects that harvesting rockweed can have on the biodiversity of those habitats.
Charlène Linderhof
2019-2022 MREs with University of Galway. Title: “Ecosystem effects of knotted wrack Ascophyllum nodosum harvesting” (PhD co-supervision with Dr. Ronan Sulpice at NUI Galway as lead. Funded by MAREI and ARRAMARA)
Charlène graduated in BSc Applied Biology at the Aeres University of Almere (The Netherlands), during which she learnt about plant biotechnology and seaweed cultivation at Wageningen University. After her BSc, she made a Pre-Master in biology at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG, the Netherlands). During her internships at NIOZ Texel and the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway, she obtained skills in seaweed identification and seaweed cultivation. In collaboration with Sulpice lab she is studied the ecological effects of Ascophyllum nodosum harvesting to develop recommendations for best seaweed harvest practices.
Mafalda Isidro
2021 MSc IMBRSea. Title "Importance of the epiphyte Vertebrata lanosa in Ascophyllum nodosum communities"
Inés Coca Tagarro
2019-2020 MRes Title “Biodiversity enhancement by two cultivated kelp species Alaria esculenta and Saccharina latissima” (MSc external supervision, NUI Galway. Funded by GENIALG Project)
