The License Application Process

All new taxi drivers must complete a theory and a practical test before they apply for a license. These tests can be booked online at this link https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/book-change-or-cancel-your-theory-test-appointment . There is some key information you will need to know about the theory test and there are a number of resources available for this, some of this can be found at the following link https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/publications/your-guide-becoming-taxi-driver-and-information-manual 

 After you have completed these tests you will then need to apply for a license by filling in an application form and providing some supporting documents, the link to download the application form can be found here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/taxi-drivers-licence-application-form-pv15-ni . You will also be required to complete an online background check through an organisation called ACCESS NI, the direct link to this is found here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/apply-online-enhanced-check-through-registered-body you will need a pin number to complete this which is 861379, just follow the instructions and you should be fine. You will need to provide a passport number (If you have one) and your driving license number also.

 With your application form you will need to provide some supporting documents these include:

 o Taxi Theory and Taxi Practical Test Pass Certificates

 o Photo ID (Both Parts of Driving License, Valid Passport)

 o Proof of right to work in the UK (Passport, Long Birth Certificate, Work Permit)

 o Two Proofs of Address not older than 3 months (Bank Statement, Utility Bill)

 o Passport Style Photograph

 o £140 fee

Once you have passed the tests and sent away the documents for your license you will receive a medical examination form which you must take to your GP and then post back to the DVA in Coleraine, after all these steps have been completed you wait until the DVA issue you a license.

Please note that a Taxi Theory Test costs £35 and a Practical Test costs £65.

If the Theory and Practical Tests are passed first time and there are no significant medical disclosures to be made we find that most first time applicants receive their licence within 8-10 weeks
