About David R. Hammontree
David R. Hammontree is an administrator, educator, and public servant whose career has been built around leadership, stewardship, and helping organizations serve people effectively.
For more than 30 years, David has worked in higher education and public service. For over 15 years, he has served in administrative leadership roles involving personnel management, organizational oversight, budgeting, policy implementation, and stewardship of organizational resources. His work has consistently required accountability, sound judgment, clear communication, and public trust.
David currently serves as an Associate Professor and program administrator. Throughout his career, he has worked to help people understand complex information, navigate challenging situations, and make informed decisions. Those same skills guide his approach to public service.
What distinguishes David is not simply leadership experience, but a record of accepting responsibility. Whether working in higher education, nonprofit organizations, or public service, he has consistently been entrusted with roles requiring oversight, accountability, collaboration, and stewardship.
David's service extends beyond his professional career. Through multiple city and county boards, commissions, and nonprofit organizations, he has worked on issues involving taxation, assessments, redevelopment, housing, elections, public safety, and community development. Those experiences have provided firsthand insight into how local government functions and how different offices work together to serve residents.
One lesson David has learned through years of public service is that no office operates in isolation. Communities are best served when public officials, staff, volunteers, and residents work together to address concerns and build trust.
A first-generation college graduate, David began his educational journey at Illinois Central College before earning bachelor's and master's degrees in Political Science from the University of Illinois and a master's degree and Ph.D. in English Studies from Illinois State University.
Outside of Work
David and his wife, Amanda, have lived in the City of Jackson since 2010 with various groupings of cats. David enjoys reading across a wide range of genres, with a particular interest in nonfiction and comic books.
