Don't you just love a scammer...NOT

But there is one thing I love to do and that is to scam a scammer.

They are easy to spot...Typically there is someone that they are gifting...like a daughter who is getting married; they will never talk to you on the phone...often times will tell you its because they are deaf; they want to place a large order and tell you that they will send the pay upfront....they never have a credit card and want to pay by check and when they do send the check they will send you a message even before the check arrives in your mailbox telling you that in error, the check was written for the wrong amount....literally WAY MORE then the value of the order...but hey, they trust you and to just go ahead and cash it and send them a refund check for the difference.

So back to the story...I wanted to get my hands on the check to actually see what it looked like.

Scammer person sent me an email through the Norwex website stating that they wanted to place an order for "corporate gifts". They would pay up front with a Company check and I didn't have send the order until the check was in my hand. I played along telling them how excited I was to get such a generous order and how my family needed the income so badly and that this was "a huge answer to prayer." They responded that it touched their heart so much that they were going to start purchasing from me for their "other companies" as well and that they would be sending more business my way! Then they switched to texts, making it more personal. The 1st text came a day after they mailed the check ..."we are so sorry, the payment department sent a check for $3,740.00 in error!"

Then they proceeded to tell me how much they trusted me and to simply mail them a refund check for the overpayment ($3,100). I told them "No Problem!" They asked if I could send that to them right away and I said that I would as soon as I got the check. They didn't like that and provided me tracking information showing that the check was indeed on its way. I told them that I would send a check that day, which of course I didn't.

After a couple more days they texted "concerned" because they still hadn't received my refund check. I told them that I had written it but had decided not to mail it until I had their check in my hand. That made them very unhappy.

They knew when the check would arrive and knew exactly when I received it....I played them for a couple of extra days telling them I didn't receive it and that totally un-nerved them. They insisted that the check was delivered to my mail box to which I responded "not my mailbox."  

I played the game for a couple more days then texted them that the check finally arrived. They again asked that I send the refund check right away and I replied, "not till I cash this one." Again, that un-nerved them and they even acted offended that I didn't trust them

HERE'S THE PART THAT I WANT YOU ALL TO BE SUPER AWARE OF....when I took the check to the bank, the teller said the check looked just fine and that I could deposit it into my account. I insisted that the check was fake and she insisted that it wasn't. I asked her what would happen if the check ended up being fake and it charged back to my account and she said I would be charged a $20 fee. Then she called over the Sr Teller who also told me the check was just fine and I could go ahead and cash it.

At that point, I insisted on talking to the bank manager. The bank manager confirmed that the check was fake. I asked her how she could tell:

asterisks in the pay to order area as well as in the digital amount area

hologram on the front of the check is not normal

the picture of the lock on the back of the check was "abnormal" and "overkill"

Moral of the story, don't fall for this crap. Sadly, people are falling for it all the time, that's why scammers keep doing it. If you get an out of the blue order that only wants to pay by check be super careful. Check it out, and never send refunds for overpayment.
