This section discusses a few of the projects that I have had the pleasure to work with my students on throughout my latter years of teaching. Continue to visit this website for more project ideas and a future blog for ideas with instruction.
Students posing with their completed project at our exhibition. This was a more hands on project where the students had to learn safety tips for utilizing power tools and other carpentry tools. They also had to create a podcasts discussing the animal who would use their box and the process for constructing the box.
It is always great to see the end product after an amazing PBL project. This project was a cross-curricular project with a Biology teacher and I (Engineering) where the students had to develop a teaching activity, tool, software, etc. that would help struggling students learn biology. The setting was that the students acted as educational consultants or companies at a Expo working to get the audience (parents, special invited guests, and administrators) to vote on their product being the best to solve the problem.
Our students were able to show their bravery in this particular project. They each had to create a sample TED Talk in their English class and incorporate their Biological topic into the speech. The Engineering part of this project was two-fold, I was able to teach them how to edit film and also create marketing signs/posters for the upcoming talk. This is a photo of one of the students on stage sharing his piece live to his classmates as one of the top talks voted on by his peers.
Students worked in partners for this PBL and they had to incorporate their Biological understanding of relationships, Geographical location to best live, Architectural skills to design a place to live and place it all in a formatted portfolio for English class. This was one of my favorite projects because the students really had to use their math skills to measure and their artistic skills to design the home. The title of this project was "The Game of Life" based on the board game and we (the teachers) were able to have the students pull for a life situation that may have placed a wrench in their design plans before the end of the project. The students really enjoyed this project.
