Molluscum contagiosum

What is Molluscum contagiosum (MC)?

MC is a skin infection caused by virus. It is commonly seen in children and adults with low immunity. It is contagious in nature and spreads due to contact with an infected person or a contaminated object (use of infected towels, toys etc.). Its spread is via skin to skin contact or via unprotected sex.

What are the signs and symptoms?

It causes round, firm, painless bumps. If left untreated they disappear on their own usually with no scars. However, it may take a few months to a few years. If it is on face or hands, people prefer to remove it rather than waiting for its disappearance over time.
