If I were to explore this topic futher, I would look at specific women. For example, Josephine Baker was a singer who was part of the USO, traveling abroad and in the U.S. to entertain troops. She refused to perform for segregated audiences, demanding that African American troops also be part of the audience.  Josephine Baker also served as a spy during the war.
