In 1957, Dr Cary Che Wai Chuen graduated from Sun Yat Sen University Medical School in Guangzhou China, working as a teaching and resident surgeon until travelling to Australia in 1962. After sitting for medical exams and re-qualifying as a doctor in Australia he worked at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney.
In 1969 he commenced practice in East Melbourne, before opening his medical practice in Bundoora in 1972, based in Oxford Drive, which then relocated to a newly built surgery in Grimshaw St in 1973. Previously known as the Bundoora Medical Centre, Bundoora Medical and Acupuncture Centre, and more recently Witney Medical Centre, Dr Chuen's clinic was a fixture of medical services in the area.
In his time he treated many local patients and families, attending to them at what was then the Bundoora and District Hospital built in 1979 (now Northpark Private Hospital) and the Diamond Valley Community Hospital.
During his time he advocated for the integration of Chinese acupuncture with Western Medicine and was involved in the establishment of the Australian Medical Acupuncture College. He supported Chinese Medical Graduates arriving in Australia and was a founding member of the Australian Chinese Medical Association of Victoria.
He remained active in the Victorian Chinese Community, serving variously as President and Committee member for the Chinese Fellowship of Victoria (維省僑友社), Num Pon Soon Society (南番顺同鄉會), and Hong Kong Club of Victoria (維省香港會).
Dr Chuen remained an active general practitioner until December 2023 when he passed away peacefully.
