Dr. Brooms is the Executive Director of the Black Men's Research Institute (BMRI) and Professor of Africana Studies and History, serves as a youth worker, and is an award-winning educator and scholar. His research and activism focus on educational equity, racial justice, and liberation. His education research primarily centers on Black men and boys’ pathways to and through college as well as the collegiate experiences of Black and Latino men. He also focuses on the lived experiences of Black boys and men and factors that contribute to their positioning in U.S. and life outcomes.
Most recently, Dr. Brooms was acknowledged as a 2024 Warrior Spirit Awardee from the International Colloquium on Black Males in Education and is the 2023 recipient of the Mid-Career Scholar Award from the Critical Examination of Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender in Education SIG (Special Interest Group) of the American Educational Research Association.
Dr. Brooms serves as founding editor of the "Critical Race Studies in Education" book series with SUNY Press and has hosted and co-facilitated several book writing retreats. He also serves as the co-editor of the Journal of African American Males in Education and Higher Education Section Editor for the Journal of Negro Education.
