Just landed in Verona! The plane ride actually wasn't bad. I was in business class, right behind first class! I was shocked when no one sat next to me so I had the row all to myself. The flight attendant brought me a blanket with a sleep mask, complimentary orange juice, and a warm towel. I felt like I was in a movie! Surprisingly, the airport wasn't that bad. I always get searched, especially my hair because it was in a bun and they thought I was hiding something in there. Oh well!
Flying into Germany was a bit crazy though. The airport felt small for some reason and it was very humid, probably because it looked like it was about to rain. I was lost for a second though as I didn't know where my group was. Luckily, we had a group chat and I was able to message there and a sweet girl named Hannah found me and led me to the group. We all introduced ourselves, but I'm probably going to struggle to remember some of the others' names.
When we got into Verona, it was really rainy and the apartment complex seemed a bit smaller than what I saw in the pictures online, but it's cute. It's light green and I have a closet, a desk, a nightstand, and a bench. The bed is very tiny. Thank god I got my own room. I also have a door that leads to the balcony, not much of a view though. My roommates are Carmen, Delaney, and Gigi. I'm excited to get to know them better, they all seem nice!
Better get some rest! Orientation starts tomorrow!
Who knew that Italy would be freezing cold?! Luckily, I brought a puffer jacket that dad got me, but even then, I'm still cold! Classes went well so far! during orientation, we walked around the city and were told of places that may be of importance to us, such as the grocery store and the street that leads to the historic center, as well as some restaurants along the way!
The heater in my room is very confusing and it started to spray water at me! Luckily Delaney figured out how to work it and fix it! The bed is a bit hard and the pillow isn't that soft. I have to make do! Goodnight Verona!
Orientation day 2! Got a tour of the university and where our classes would be! I got lunch with a group of girls from Cincinnati, Ohio! They're all nice, but I felt a little excluded since they all knew each other. Still had a great time!
Some of the girls are talking about going for dinner and then checking out a local club! I've never gone out so I am excited to go and dance and meet new people!
(Later)
The club was called DiscotecaLove! It was very fun and I loved all the music, but I was surprised to hear a lot of American music.
I actually made some friends with locals and they are all nice! Except they didn't know where New Mexico was. I had to tell them I was from where the show Breaking Bad is based. That was the way that they understood, which is actually pretty cool!
The first official day of classes! I had Italian I and Italian Culture! Both of the professors seem very kind and the classes will be fun and interesting!
It was raining again today and very cold! I wish it would warm up!
I went to the store today to go and get some simple groceries and things that I can make easy lunches and dinners with since I am not the greatest cook. My roommates and I all have assigned shelves in the fridge, but I bought pasta and sauce for everyone since it can be something easily made and it wasn't that expensive.
Though there's this little sandwich place just around the corner from the school called Doc & Dop, run by a man named Antonello and a woman named Diana! They are so sweet and it's cheaper than going to a restaurant in the historic center.
Arrived in Milan! It was our first time taking the train and it wasn't that bad actually! I came with some girls named Hannah, Carmen (my roommate), Kelly, and Elle. We met up with Elle's boyfriend and friends who are studying abroad in Torino and explored the city. It's so beautiful and so many people. There are so many high-end shops like Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton... they're all over!! We are staying the night and leaving in the morning, so we are probably going to go eat tonight and then head to bed!
What's nice is I'm making some friends!
Came to Venice with the entire group! One of the girls had the idea of all of us sharing an Airbnb and staying the night to get to know each other more! The Airbnb is huge and can fit 30 people! I'm sharing a room with Carmen and Hannah. We got the master bedroom!
Elle and I decided to come to Padova for a day trip! Her and I take all the same classes, except Roman Art. We both had the day off and said, why not?!
Came to Antonello's and got a sandwich. Antonello doesn't speak English so I tried my best to speak Italian to order! He understood and made me a delicious sandwich! Then I gave him an American Dollar and me and my friends signed it for him!
Tonight I'm going to go out with these girls named Alyssa and Lex and Gigi! I'm excited!
Hannah made dinner for Elle and me and it was delicious! Just some spaghetti noodles and grilled chicken. Hannah bought this spice from Antonello's and made it with the chicken. It was amazing! Then we tried to dance. Didn't go too well.
Then we tried to play UNO. But Hannah got her cards from the local gift shop and the directions aren't in English and there are more than 4 colors and had zoo animals on them.... strange.
Elle and I both got sick! She has some health issues but I caught bronchitis! We went to the doctor and the doctor was very kind! He gave me medications to help me get better faster.
Elle wanted to go out with a new friend she made named Johannes. He's her neighbor and is from Estonia! He wants to take us to this restaurant that's like a speakeasy. We will see!
We are also going to meet up with other study abroad students that go to school with Johannes. He said that there are people from Belgium, Mexico, Greece, and Croatia I can't wait to meet all of them!!
Made a last-minute trip to Florence! Carmen, Hannah, Haley, Addie, and I all went on the fast train and got here!
We went to the museum where the Statue of David is and I cried at the sight of him he was just so beautiful and he is the reason why I study Art History! Looking at the extreme detail just mesmerizes me. The rest of the museum also had beautiful paintings and castes of other famous sculptures. The original Rape of the Sabine Women was there as well and was huge! I could spend the entire day there if I could.
We then went inside the Duomo and I was a bit underwhelmed with the simplicity inside. I'm sad I didn't get to go up to the bell tower, but I was too tired to walk up all those stairs!
Then we went to a rooftop bar and there were beautiful views of the churches and the city! It was very cold, but we still had a great time!
Addie and I had gotten out of class early today and decided to explore more of Verona! We went to the Castelvecchio museum which is rather close to our school! The lady was kind and let us go into the museum for free! It was a large and fun museum full of all kinds of art and artifacts!
I leave in a couple days for my solo trip to Venice for Carnivale. I'm a bit nervous!
of Arrived in Venice yesterday for my solo trip! I got my little Airbnb and it's really cute and close to the train station, maybe a 10 minute walk. Today, I went to look around. There were a couple people dressed up but I was able to go into the basilica of St. Mark. It was beautiful and everything was covered in gold. There was a moment where I was in there completely alone. The quitness was... comforting. I studied all the different mosaics and it was all just beautiful. I was scared to come alone, but honestly I learned a lot about myself on this trip and that it's okay to be alone to travel.
Missing mom a lot today. It's her birthday! I called her and talked to her for a while, just telling her how everything was going and that the historic center was all decorated for Valentines day!
It was very cute in the Piazza Erbe where food and vendor stands were placed in the shape of a heart and there were hearts everywhere! So cute!
Hannah's parents are in town and decided to take us out for Hannah's birthday today to a fancy Mexican restaurant! It was delicious and I was very thankful for the food they got all of us as it was rather expensive!
First test today for Italian and a presentation for Roman Art! I'm a bit nervous to know how I did on both! The Italian test had a spoken part with no notes and it was to be a introduction conversation with a partner! My partner was Addie. I think we did okay though!
My presentation was on the Roman god Vulcan. It was hard to research him though as his Greek counterpart, Hephaestus, kept popping up. I also volunteered to go first so that I could get my nerves out of the way!
Went to Antonello's again today. I love going to that little restaurant. I like that the atmosphere is very calm and the music Antonello plays is all Italian. He already knows my order!
Today is a local festival in Verona! There was a large parade with beautiful floats! Confetti littered the streets and people were dressed in costumes! Vendors sold homemade pasta along the streets and were cooking! It smelled amazing! And then for some reason there were kids throwing flour on people. Poor Carmen got flour bombed. It got all in her hair and her clothes! It was funny though! Carmen, Elle, and I all went together and had a blast. Part of the parade was a figure called Papa Gnoco! He supposedly is like Santa Claus, just giving pasta to poor children instead. There were so many people and it was just very fun! We walked home and got ready to go out. Well, Elle and I. Carmen was tired and had to get ready to go on a trip. Everyone is actually leaving tonight or early tomorrow morning, so Elle and I decided to stay in Verona to explora more and just hang out. A couple weeks ago she went with her boyfriend (he's studying in Torino) to a swimming pool club type of thing and meet some other Americans! They're in the army and said they wanted to come to Verona for the weekend, so we will hang out with them tomorrow. But tonight, Elle and I are going to DiscotecaLove to dance!
Elle and I got out at the same time again. We went and ate at Antonello's, though he wasn't there is was just Diana, and decided to go explore the city more. We went to the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Palazzo Forti museum and had fun!
Came out with the girls again! We came to this Mexican restaurant that's fairly close to our apartments. It was nice to have a change in food since there isn't much other types of foods in general. I got a green chilie pork tamale and it was pretty good!
Went to Padova again with the entire group. It was a bit of a gloomy day today. I'm feeling a bit out of it today also. I'm really missing home and just feel a bit sad. I can't wait to just be alone tonight in my room. I think I've been around people for too long.
Carmen, Hannah, Addie and I were supposed to fly off to London today! Sadly, Carmen got sick and Hannah decided she didn't want to go, but Addie and I still wanted to anyway. We hopped on the plane and it was a nice and easy flight. Our Airbnb is fancy, we just shared the house with the host. It was very nice and in the center of London. We walked around a lot and bought souviners. We saw Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. There's so many people and it is just a wonderful city! For dinner, we ate at Gordon Ramsay's burger restaurant! It was delicious! Tomorrow we will wake up and leave at 10am. It was a noce little over night trip and wished I would've stayed a little longer, but I still got to see it!
My parents came to visit me! I cried when I saw them. I really missed them and was just happy to see them. I ran up and hugged my mom. I just missed her. Same with my dad. We all hung out and went to eat. I'm staying with them over the weekend in Venice. I'm happy that they are here! They flew into Venice and it's super cold and rainy! I hope it's not like this the entire time! Luckily, my school schedule isn't too crazy these two weeks that they are here so I get to hang out with them after class!
Brought my parents to Verona! I'm happy they get to see where I have been living. I took them to Antonello's today and invited my friends. Elle, Carmen, and Hannah ate with us, and Gigi and Lex came in to introduce themselves. Mom and dad seemed to like my friends and thought the location of my school was nice. Then we went to the Castelvecchio Museum. They really liked it there!
Brought mom and dad to Florence! They had wanted to see the Statue of David and the Duomo. They both seemed to have a great time. We spent the entire day there and had a great time. Dad got me the traditional little horn necklace that is for good luck here in Italy. I love it and it is super cute! They leave in a couple of days and I'm sad to see them go. It also reminded me that I was halfway done with my program and I got to go home soon.
A lot of people went out of town for St. Patrick's Day, but not Elle and me! We have become good friends and travel partners. We always hang out and watch movies in the downstairs movie room, eating ice cream and other snacks! We went to Brescia today because she had heard that the town celebrates it more than Verona does. We hopped on the train and spent the entire day there, though it seemed that the only Irish thing there was an Irish pub. They had good fish 'n' chips though! We came back to Verona and decided to celebrate at one of our favorite spots called Campus Bar and Pub. Elle got a new neighbor and we all wanted to hang out. Her neighbor's name is Ryan and he is from Iran. I'm just happy we got to relax and have some fun today! Especially because I keep losing my voice. Just too much excitement! Elle got a little hat from the pub, but she lost it. How sad.
We got into Trento to stay for the weekend as a group. Tomorrow we go to Austria, but we visited a museum in the mountains today and it was really nice! There was a bunch of Medieval artworks there which was cool and it was in an old Medieval castle. Tonight some of us went to go out to hang out at a little bar and dance, but we were the only ones there! It was still fun. I'm sharing a room with Alyssa and we bought so much McDonalds!
Austria was beautiful! I hung out mostly with Gigi, Jessica, Janelle, and Jocelyn today. I had wanted to tag along with them since they wanted to see the museums and stuff. It was rainy again, but just so beautiful. Sadly, we are only spending one day here, but the town is very small. We were in Innsbruck. Now we are back in Trento. I just finished eating with the girls I hung out with today. I'm getting ready to go down to the pool with Elle. There's a sauna and a little pool so we wanted to relax before going out tonight!
Carmen, Carmen's friend Kristen, Hannah, Kelly, Haley, Ellie, and I decided to come to Rome for Easter break! We took the fast train and it took a while for us to get to the Airbnb, but our Airbnb is beautiful! It has frescoes on the walls and has a little spiral staircase to a loft with three beds. There's a large master room and a guest bedroom. It was perfect for all of us. I seem to not be getting better from my sickness. My voice sounds terrible and my nose is stuffed. I messaged the doctor and he gave me medications before I left so hopefully those take action soon. We are right down the street from the Fountain of Trevi. I can't wait to see more of the city tomorrow! I just love Rome. It's beautiful everywhere you look. I love walking into random churches and seeing the art inside. This city truly makes and art history major happy!
Haley and Ellie flew from Rome to go to Amsterdam while the rest of us went to Sorrento! It was my idea because I just remembered last time when I went, I fell in love with the city. We had to wait in the Naples train station for a few hours though. We decided to stay in the train station because the part of Naples we were in was a little sketchy. We ate at this Mexican food place and it was actually really good! When we were waiting, Hannah and Kelly went to look for playing cards so we could entertain ourselves for a while. There's only one ferry during the day that goes to Sorrento so it took a while. Hannah and Kelly came back with the cards, but also bought Carmen and me princess crowns! It was so sweet! We got onto the ferry and it was a nice ride. Carmen got us a bungalow by the ocean and it's really cute. No heater though so we were a bit cold!! Tomorrow we are going to shop!
Hannah and Kelly went off to kind of do their own thing as they wanted to relax in the bungalow, tired from all the travelling. Carmen and I though wanted to explore more of the city, so we went out and walked around, especially around all the little shops! They are all so cute and things here are relatively cheap! We soon met back up with Kelly and Hannah and went to get lunch at a restaurant by the water. Now that restaurant was expensive! But it was nice to eat there and look at the ocean. Tomorrow we leave and we have to figure out how to get back to Verona!
Once again, we are waiting at the same train station in Naples. It was a bit of a complicated ride to get here though! The ferry leaves once a day from Sorrento to Naples and it's at 6pm, but our train ride back home is at 4! Luckily, we were able to catch a ride on a train, it just took a long time! We have to wait here at the train station for a couple hours and then we get on a fast train back to Verona. I loved visiting southern Italy, but I'm ready to go back to Verona and relax in my room. Jessica texted me and invited me to go with her and some of the other girls to Cinque Terre! Why not?!
Today was the day we traveled to Cinque Terre. I came with Jessica, Janelle, Jocelyn, and our TA from Italian class Valentina. It was nice to have Valentina there as she was able to help translate.
However, it was a difficult ride to get here! Today, a lot of the trains went on a political strike, canceling our direct train from Verona to Cinque Terre. Since Valentina could easily communicate, she found a route for us to take, it was just a lot of train transfers! We got to our Airbnb pretty late and just relaxed after traveling all day. I was able to get a room to myself which was really nice! I had to figure out the heater but once I did, it was really nice to have a big bed again.
Tomorrow, Valentina said she will show us how to get around here and visit the cities of Cinque Terre! But now, we are eating some dinner and just chatting.
I can't wait to see the cities tomorrow! Apparently, the city of Vernazza is what the Disney movie Luca is based on! It looks so cute!
Cinque Terre is so beautiful! I didn't know that we were hiking today and all of us wore dresses, except Valentina. But it was worth it! Sadly, I'm still struggling to get over my bronchitis and the thin air from hiking made it a struggle to keep up, but it was so beautiful and we were able to see all five cities! My favorite was Vernazza!
Today, the entire group went to Lake Garda. Again, I mostly hung out with Jessica, Janelle, and Jocelyn because they like to see the same things I do. We just walked around the city, hung out at the shorelines, and got lunch along the shore as well. They are famous for really large gelato cones here so we got one each! They were delicious!
We went back to Verona after and I had to do some grocery shopping. I also walked around the historic center and talked to the waiters at one of the restaurants that we became friends with before I went back to my room.
Today, we had a field trip for my Italian Food and Culture class! We went to an olive oil distillery and it was really cool! There was so much olive oil and we learned how to taste olive oil like professionals! It was a little rainy but it was still a nice day!
I made some make-shift chicken fajitas and they were really good! I didn't think I was a good cook, but now I know I can survive.
Tonight I'm going out again. Wednesdays are for college students and I just like to meet new people! And I don't have a class until later tomorrow anyway.
I only had a couple of classes today. The building that we are living in has house keeping cleaners come in every other week and I knew I had to be out of the apartment by 8am, so I went to the movie room to watch a movie before going to class.
Class was okay today. It went by slowly but luckily it was only Italian Culture class and Italian class. After, I went to eat at Antonello's and then came home. Elle wanted to go out to Campus Bar for another college night. I love dancing and don't have class tomorrow, so I'll go! Just can't stay out too late because we leave to Greece in the morning!
We landed in Crete today! Greece is so beautiful! It was funny though because when we were trying to catch a bus, Carmen tried to wave it down and the bus driver simply waved back! Eventually, we found someone who spoke English and they ordered us a taxi. We got to our Airbnb and it was really cute! Carmen, Elle, and I met Alyssa there and started getting ready to go get some dinner. We went to this one restaurant and the food was delicious! I never had lamb before but I really liked it! Tonight, the girls wanted to go try this fancy restaurant and of course, I was willing to go! We got dressed and went and it was really nice! Tomorrow we are going to walk around and do some shopping and then the next day we will go to the beach to relax! I can't wait to see the ocean!
We flew into Athens and checked into our Airbnb yesterday! Alyssa left with her sister to Santorini. The place is kind of strange because we are in a basement, but it'll work for the days we are here. We walked around and the city is really big! But we are really close to the Akropolis. We are going to go see that tomorrow and I am so excited! The temple looks huge and just beautiful! I just love all the ruins around the city.
The Akropolis is BEAUTIFUL! It was an easy hike to get to the top, but it was just so beautiful. Even with the temples in ruin, they are massive and just beautiful. I got a little sunburnt, but it was work it. I'm so happy to get Athens off the bucketlist, though you definitely need at least a week in Athens to see other monuments, but Carmen, Elle, and I had a great time! We leave tomorrow morning Back to Verona.
Came home today from the trip to Greece! I took a nap and Haley said she wanted to go hang out at Campus Bar. I decided to go hang out even though I have almost completely lost my voice. I went and hung out and we got some food. What's nice about Campus Bar is they have American food, so I was able to eat some nachos. It was college night again and it was nice to see all the college students!
Jessica, Jocelyn, and Janelle had invited me to go to a concert with them! The concert is in the Arena and I am excited. The singer is popular here in Italy (like the equivalent of Pitbull). Our seats are on the floor. I'm just excited to see a concert at the Arena! The artist's name is Sfera Ebbasta! I'm so excited!
We arrived in Munich, Germany! A good amount of us have planned on going on this trip because there is a festival called Springfest! It's a lot like Oktoberfest, but this one is just in the spring! We also went through this traveling agency that is college-friendly. We are camping in the woods and they provide free food and drinks. They also gave us dirndls and a lederhosen for Donny (he's the only boy who wanted to come). We came back from the festival a little while ago. They had a bunch of fun rides and beer gardens. I can only imagine how big it is when it's really Oktoberfest! It's nice to get to spend time with the group. I'm sharing a tent with Addie. Well, got to head to bed and do it all over again tomorrow!
Sierra wanted to go out for her birthday, so she invited Haley and I to go with her! A couple of Sierra's friends from home came to visit for her birthday, so we all went out and celebrated! It was really nice!
I had Italian class and Roman Art and Architecture class. After class, I decided to go walk around the city. I know my time in Italy is coming to an end and it's been making me really sad because I love this place so much.
I went to the Arena and read a book there for about an hour or so. Just alone. I'd take breaks to look at the people, the pigeons, and cobblestone, and the Arena, trying to memorize it and this feeling. It makes me sad to leave, but exctied at the same time to go home and see what new adventure awaits me. Verona will always hold a special place in my heart.
It's Cinco de Mayo! But obviously they don't celebrate that in Italy. Lucy, one of the girls, decided to have a lunch for us to celebrate. Hannah's brother is in town so he came also. It was a nice little get together.
I've been in my head a lot lately, just coming to the realization of this wonderful experience is ending, but I know that something good will come from it. I just know I'm going to miss everyone. I feel like I just made such good friends here.
But, I do miss home. I miss my cat especially.
A lot of the group went to Lake Como today, but Carmen, Kelly, Hannah, and Hannah's brother Jacob wanted to go to Lake Garda, so I agreed to come also last minute. We took a bus there and it wasn't bad. I just fell asleep listening to music. When we got there, we ate and rented a boat for the day! It was actually really nice! We even went swimming, but the lake was really cold! It was a fun experience though. And Lake Garda is so beautiful. We were right in front of a beautiful palace when we swam. Then rain drops started to fall and we drove back to shore just in case.
Tonight is a last dinner for us. Some people didn't come, but most of us were there. We all brought out own food, played games, and just talked. Elle left earlier today and it didn't settle with me that she was leaving until she was already gone. I was really sad when she walked away, especially because her and I became such good friends. Tomorrow morning is when I get on my plane. Haley, Sierra, and I had left earlier than everyone because we were going to meet some other friends, and I realized it would be my last time seeing Hannah. We cried and hugged for a long time.
It's going to be rough tomorrow at the airport.
Gigi came into my room when I came back to the apartment and told me her goodbyes as well. We hugged and talked for a little bit. Took everything in me not to break down. I'm going to miss everyone so much, but I know that there are more adventures for me to come and I can't wait to see what those adventures are!
