Network Science Week 2:
Tour of Networks
Tour of Networks
Recall that we can classify networks into four categories: technological, networks of information, social, and biological. This week, we dig deeper into the empirical study of each type of network.
In the activity, we will get started with Gephi and produce our first visualization of a network.
In the discussion, you will share a part of the reading that you found interesting and connect this to a colleague's post.
To make progress on the learning objectives, you should complete the following tasks this week:
Scan Chapters 2 through 5 of Newman. Take note of any examples or topics that you find especially interesting, and read these more closely. (You'll use this in the Discussion this week)
Watch Network Science Week 2 - Technological Networks and the Internet
Watch Network Science Week 2 - Gephi Demonstration - Technological Networks and The Power Grid
Watch "Networks of Information - World Wide Web"
Watch "Networks of Information - Citation Networks"
Watch "Social Network Analysis"
Watch "Biological Networks"
Complete Activity for Week 2
Make a post and reply to Discussion for Week 2
By the end of the week, you should be able to:
Describe the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web
Distinguish the different representations of the Internet
Identify at least one example from each category of network in detail
Compare networks within and between the four categories of networks
Create a visualization of a network using technology
Part of the direction this week were to scan chapters 2 through 5 of Newman to locate at least one example network or topic that you found especially interesting. You will report on your reading in the discussion this week.
Make a post that describes the network in detail or summarizes the topic; include your reasoning for choosing the network/topic. If you used sources other than Newman, be sure to cite them.
Reply to another's post with a connection between the network/topic you chose and the network/topic they chose.
