Our Story

Our team (Layfield Family Racing) started racing in 2015. Clara started us out at the age of 9. one year later, Daniel (Clara's brother) began racing as well. That same season, Clara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It changed our lives completely. However, we were still determined to keep racing as both kids loved it too much. Clara didn't want to let diabetes stop her! throughout the years we have raced in many places and in every place we have gone, someone has stared or asked what was on Clara's insulin pump/sensors WAS. Since this was a recurring theme, Clara decided to make it her mission to educate other people on Type 1 diabetes. This will help people understand what she lives with and will then reduce the stigma around the disease. We also educate  people on the symptoms of diabetes so they can be diagnosed early, as it was almost TOO late for Clara when she was diagnosed.  We were told that if we had not brought clara TO the doctor when we did, one more day and she wouldn't have made it. Please learn the symptoms and watch out for THEM. you could save a life! Diabetes has changed our lives, but we do not let it stop us and neither should you!

"it only takes a finger prick"

Diabetes can be detected through a simple blood sugar check (finger prick). Doctors don't tend to do this test when children go into the clinic not feeling well. This is why diabetes often goes undiagnosed for so long. If a simple finger prick were done, you could have your answer right then and there. That is why our motto is "It only takes a finger prick." We want to spread this message so that parents will push for a finger prick at doctors' appointments. This way, diabetes will be detected much faster in a lot of cases, and there will be fewer deaths because of misdiagnosis.

The last part of our story has to do with fundraising. Clara organizes many fundraisers, sells merchandise and collects donations. All of this money, as well as some money from her winnings, goes to type 1 diabetes research. We support DRIFCAN in Edmonton, Alberta, as they are close to home and are looking for a cure for type 1 diabetes. We are very passionate about one day finding a cure, and knowing we helped fund it just makes it even better!
