Abraham Lincoln Tower, or Lincoln Tower, was opened at 1967 and was named after the 16th president of the United States. The Lincoln Tower has many names such as River Tower Dormitory 2 or Olentangy Residence Halls. However, the main name Lincoln Tower comes from a deep respect for Abraham Lincoln signing the Morill Land Grant Act. This Act gave states land to sell to help them fund public schools. In other words, Ohio State University would not have existed if Abraham Lincoln had not signed the Morill Land Grant Act (Kim).
On the left is a photo of Lincoln Tower published in The Lantern newspaper in January 1985. This picture shows the simplistic and rough nature of Lincoln Tower. Lincoln Tower is made of concrete which can look bland but also unique when compared to other buildings. It shows persistence and strength as concrete are cornerstone materials in creating long lasting buildings. Additionally, the photo shows many similarities with the current Lincoln Tower, demonstrating the great perseverance of the Tower (Kim).
This next photo from January of 2001, written in The Lantern, displays student life at the Towers. The picture on the very left shows how there are four suites all connected to each other. This shows the deep connection between the suitemates living at the Towers. Additionally, the photo on the bottom right corner shows the fridges and microwaves of the Towers. Unlike other dorms, Towers provides built in refrigerators and microwaves to help students store or cook food. Thus, students living in the Towers have a deep connection stemming from connected suites and have easy access to food (Kim).
In contrast to the strong aesthetics of the outer building, the interior can have fragile compartments. The photo on the right was in The Lantern newspaper published in January 1985 showing a flood at Lincoln Tower. As the temperature was low, the water froze on the second floor. This forced students to go without water for hours. Also, the elevators were out of service, which caused students to take the stairs up to their dorms (The Lantern 22 January 1985 — Ohio State University Newspaper Archives). Like the problems they had, in my experience at Lincoln Tower, many of the compartments are old. For instance, the bed and furniture sink. Also, occasionally elevator buttons would not work. Therefore, many compartments at Lincoln tower are unstable or old (Kim).
Lincoln Tower has four suites, all connected to one living room area. As the four suites are closely connected, Lincoln Tower provides an experience where you can live with eleven other people. This could have pros and cons. Students can socialize with more people and have deep connections with their suitemates and roommates. However, introverts may have difficulty feeling a sense of privacy. Especially if you are designated in a quad, there is little to no privacy. The dorm itself is compact for twelve people to live in, but if you live in a duo, your room has more than enough space. The view from Lincoln Tower can include the Ohio Stadium, Lincoln Field, and the Olentangy River. (there is alt text on this photo!)
