Introduction
Nicolene
: Good afternoon everyone. We are from The Cape Peninsula University of Technology and we are here to show you basic practices of hygiene. We are going to do a short play and then divide you into groups to compete for prizes.
Play
Three learners are walking toward the classroom.
Pumeza
: My mommy told me I must always wash my hands.
Aviwe
: Always?
Pumeza
: After you use the toilet and before you eat.
Asive
: (coughs) No. That wastes time.
Pumeza
: Asive you must do this when you cough. (covers her mouth and nose with both hands)
Aviwe
: Why must she do that? And why must we wash our hands?
Pumeza
: Because when you cough and sneeze you spread germs. And then you make other people sick. And if you wash your hands it makes them clean.
Asive
: We’re going to die anyway.
Pumeza
: It’s to keep us healthy.
Asive
: No. (coughs loudly)
Aviwe
: I want to know more.
Pumeza
: My mommy says-
Asive
: We don’t have to do all this stuff. (coughs)
Aviwe walks inside the class and sits next to Chadley. Pumeza and Asive join them.
Pumeza
: You must! You’re already sick.
Teacher (Mrs. Devan) enters with the nurse.
Mrs. Devan
: Good morning class.
Learners
: Good morning miss.
Mrs. Devan
: Today we have Sister Rachel joining us and she’s going to tell us about hygiene and why it is important.
Pumeza
: Now you’ll hear why you have to listen about what my mom says.
Asive drops her bubblegum on the floor and picks it up and puts it in her mouth.
Mrs. Devan
: Can we settle down now!
Nurse
: Good morning grade 3.
Learners
: Good morning Nurse Rachel.
Nurse
: Does anyone know what hygiene is?
Pumeza
: It’s keeping our bodies clean and washing our hands.
Nurse
: Yes. Well hygiene is like a pizza and washing your hands is a slice of the pizza. Other slices would be clean clothes, keeping your body clean and making sure you keep away from germs as much as possible. Does anybody know what germs are?
Well germs are ugly, tiny creatures that are all around us and can make us very sick. Although we cannot see germs they are all around us. I’m going to teach you a rhyme to say while washing your hands.
Wash your hands. Keep them clean. Germs are ugly. Germs are mean.
Later that day, Asive is coughing and falls onto the floor. A medic (Nelson) comes and takes her away.
A few days later. The learners are sitting in class talking. Asive enters. Teacher enters. Nurse enters.
Mrs. Devan
: Good morning class. Nurse Rachel is back today. She is here to check if you guys have learnt anything.
Nurse Rachel
: It’s good to be back and see Asive looking healthier. Asive got sick because she did not wash her hands before she used to. Have you guys learnt anything?
Learners
: Yes Nurse Rachel.
Nurse Rachel
: What have you learnt?
Learners
: We learnt that we should- Wash our hands and keep them clean. Germs are ugly and germs are mean!
All exit.
