Urinary incontinence, in general, is a condition that pertains to one’s inability to control urinary urges. For most people, when their bladder feels full, they do have some amount of time to spare before they relieve themselves. In fact, most people can “hold it in” without incident.
For others, this is not the case. The urge almost instantly precedes the release, which has unfortunately caused a few embarrassing moments here and there, notes Dr. Cletus Georges. It’s quite tough to deal with a situation that clearly shows an absence of control, especially when this has to do with one’s urinary urges.
Specifically, SUI is the exact condition described above, but it comes with a trigger or a stressor, therefore the name “stress” urinary incontinence.
There may be a variety of stressors that can cause one to urinate without control. In many cases involving people with SUI, a simple sneeze or a hard cough is quite sufficient to induce accidental leaking. In some cases, urinary incontinence is triggered when the person is surprised or startled.
What has been especially challenging is when people lose control over their urges whenever they need to lift something a bit heavy, which means that they likely have their hands full when this happens.
