Also, it is password protected for a reason, so let’s not pass it out to the general public, okay? This is for US, the people who are working this year, who have worked and can’t make it, for the departments who are out here early and can’t attend the meetings just yet, and so on- please keep it off social media and large lists.
If you're arriving before the 8th, you will likely be in 1 of 3 Villages. As always, check with your manager about where you will be staying.
Please follow the directions in our Arrival Guide & FAQ below!
If it looks like you may be arriving in Gerlach outside of Gerlach Office / Housing Check-in hours, please contact your Manager to make arrangements.
Do not show up in Gerlach *before* your arrival date.

While you *can* post on the DPW-Work-List, please check here first!
If you need to find a ride, or have empty space in your vehicle and you could help one or more people get into Gerlach to help our fine city rise from the dust this year, here are some forms and spreadsheets. Feel free to share them with BRC staff in other departments. This is for BRC staff only. If you have your arrangements to Reno, but still can’t find a ride from there, reach out! We can help.

If you're staying at the Gerlach Estates or Black Rock Station, meet the NVO Waste Streams crew, managed by Savannah or Squirt Russell on the walkie-talkie! They operate off-playa waste streams, much like the DPW TSA operates the on-playa waste streams.
If you are living/working off playa for any duration, you are expected to follow these rules. Nobody is here to be your mom or maid, so Leave No Trace and do it right, please. We're all in this together.
There is also a construction waste and metal scrap dumpster on-site at BRS. If you have a large or bulky amount of either of these waste streams please reach out to GWS on the radio or Savannah on Slack and their team will facilitate you accessing these dumpsters. They are also open for questions or feedback, so please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thank you to legend John Curley for always taking such epic photos of us.
As a department it has changed and evolved drastically over the years, being forced to grow as the city it supports also transformed, the pressure of the tasks in front of it not unlike the undeniable pressure of the earth forming a diamond. And sure maybe that is a bit poetic but also, Burning Man began in such a raw state, unbeknownst to its founders that it would offer such a profound platform for humanity’s yearning for connection, for permission to explore its spiritual and creative self as a community movement, for the bonds it would forge and temper and break and build anew in the fires that we set in the dark nights of our brothers and sisters. I will say building Black Rock City is comparable to pressing diamonds because it is more than just a party in the desert- it is a breeding ground for dreams and new ideas, for ways to live among each other and connect to wisdom and resources and learning. It is the permission to live outside of the box society has built even for just a short time, a reminder to look at the stars and seek joy and delight. We have the opportunity to create brilliant, faceted experiences that are indispensable to the conversation and unfolding of humanity that don’t happen the same way anywhere else. Let us forge gems and use them to see the world from perspectives previously unreachable, together.
And we, DPW, we build the bones for that every year and lovingly lay the skeleton out and push ourselves through the crucible of this mad, logistical dance in ways that have made militaries take note of how the hell we’re pulling this off. We’re a crew made of fierce heart and a community founded in diversity and yearning to be part of something bigger than ourselves. And we have grown as Burning Man has grown and while we have always been a proud group, we get to be a different kind of proud now, too. We are learning to ask for the support we need, and take time for self-care, and communicate about the moments that wound us instead of just rubbing some playa into it. I have seen this community realize that strength also comes from being genuine and vulnerable and treating others with grace, taking ownership of our mistakes and evolution means we get to make better choices next time and I think we’re getting to that point where… “next time” is actually this time.
Let us remember we are agents of wonder and return to the playa as stewards of this city, as a group of people that belong together not just because of the sweat and blood we spill alongside each other but because our unique personalities, skillsets and perspectives support each other to create a balance, a surface tension, that holds it all together. We are some of the most diversely talented, passionate people I have ever met. Let us take this once in a life time opportunity, every year, to allow ourselves to shed old, limiting ways of being and redefine ourselves every step of the way. Together.
Let us build ourselves up as we do these lovely city bones. Let our future be not about who we were, but who we choose to be in these moments, and what aspects of ourselves we allow to shine brightly wherever we go.
Thank you for joining us and bringing your energy to this wild venture; to heed the call of something unnameable that stirs in us all; to build a city out of imagination and dust.
We'll see you out there, in between the waking and the dream.

2022
Great lessons are borne of working our bodies to exhaustion in the wilds of the dusty Black Rock Desert. Getting to the end of a season is full of victorious joy - through all of the trials and tribulations, a lot of hurry up and wait, and frequently relying on what can seem like nothing more than sheer grit and a bit of duct tape. One vital ingredient in those that choose to join DPW is that we learn to embrace the challenges that can arise - both in ourselves and situationally - and in so doing, we uncover the beauty in imperfection.
Months preceding showtime are spent in meticulous preparation before the Golden Spike gets driven into the earth, and the flurry of rumbling heavy machinery and swinging hammers whip up. SOPs, maps, spreadsheets and meetings. Never forget the meetings, which will continue until morale improves. Even with these carefully laid plans, and especially when building a city where the environment is actively working against us, shit goes sideways, and we gotta improvise a solution on the fly. Something something Learning Man.
The time is nearly upon us to meet us in Gerlach, the “Center of the Known Universe.” Bring your craftsmanship, knowledge, patience, and leadership skills. Bring your sustainable jackassery, drill-powered train horns, and thrashed Volares. Bring your sea shanties, patches and moop sticks, because these are the kinds of ingredients that it takes for the DPW to lay the foundation of the magnificent Black Rock City, perfect in its imperfections…and that is what makes it our home.
Thank you for joining us and adding your spark to the fire! Can’t wait to see you there.
With love and dust,
Pynecone
