These are what we call Core Courses on Hive and we want to encourage all of DPW to enjoy access to this resource. These concepts not only support doing it better next year, but also doing it better in THIS one, meeting the present moment with tools that will allow us all to accept, learn from, and grow with each other. And this is just the beginning- this space has so much more potential, it's just waiting for us all to engage with it. So go check it out and help build a better DPW.
Karen Jacobs, Education Dept. Learning Manager drafts the following about these HIVE courses:
"The six courses listed here form a vital learning foundation for Burning Man Project staff members, and indeed for all Burners. With this foundation, we hope that we all can grow in our abilities of collaboration and support, and that we can reach out to new members of our community, and also beyond the Burning Man community into the wider world."
"This course in Conflict Resolution and De-escalation has been developed from trainings the Black Rock Rangers have been honing for years, based on their on-the-ground experiences in Black Rock City in providing community mediation, crisis management, and human connection. It has been adapted here for use by Burners in all roles, on playa and in the Default World."
"All groups of people, whether they are working in an organization or working on a project in a remote, sun-baked desert, are faced with making decisions that affect the whole. So HOW do these decisions get made? This course will look at the decision-making process, including the concept of the meta-decision: the process of deciding how to decide."
"Emotional Intelligence (EI) is important, the value and benefits of developing your EI are extensive and in many areas massively under-utilized. Emotional Intelligence is a gateway to living a more fulfilled and happy life. Join this course to learn more about why and more importantly how."
"This class is for anyone who is new to Burning Man’s model of feedback, anyone who gets nervous in the face of having difficult conversations (or just plain avoids them), or for anyone who’d like to brush up and get some practice on their feedback / difficult conversation skills. In this course you will learn the tools necessary to give and receive both positive and constructive feedback in a healthy and fruitful way."
"By the end of this course, you will be able to identify your social identities, define implicit bias, learn why it’s essential that our community understands this concept, and come away with a few tools to begin unlearning your biases."
"This course unpacks the concept of anti-racism by first looking at the historical creation of systemic and structural racism. The definitions of and relationships between systemic, structural, and interpersonal racism are examined. The course closes with an exploration of the concepts of intersectionality and micro-aggressions."
Additionally, this course is for those who are relatively new to anti-racism work, as well as those who aren’t new but could use a refresher or a reframing. This course will discuss impact versus intent, as it relates to unconscious bias and microaggressions, both in theory as well as practice.
