Life is a journey; exploration and discovery. In the past, people used rivers and lakes to travel as we use roads today. These are the routes we travel to the wilderness and back. Perhaps it is this vastness of the land that herds otherwise solitary painters to reflect in groups. The threads of inspiration and vision that become dwarfed by the land, sky, water and particularly seasonal quality of light, are reinforced in the sharing. After the life altering myopia of pandemic isolation, this show is a celebration of the expansiveness that awaits (in an environment that too has been healing)…..one that has always been there.

Elizabeth McQueen and Richard Kowalchuk have been collaborating for over 25 years. They have schemed, concocted, planned, cooked-up, promoted, developed and created for their art program, teacher events, social/charity/political activities, advertisements and brochures for various artistic and community events and causes. Both have a keen interest in applying artistic interpretation to their psychological and emotional attachment to the natural world. Most of their imagery comes from wild settings which include rock, water, skies, trees and reflections.

For their inspiration both travel to the outdoors...Rick, by flyfishing from the urban location of Bronte Creek to the remote interior north of Superior and Elizabeth by heading north to the forest of the Almaguin Highlands for half of the year, since her retirement from teaching seven years ago.

Over the past three years I have been a bit obsessed with recording light at 8:30 p.m. at the rustic boat launch down the road from my studio north, outside of Restoule, Ontario. The spectacular shifts in mood from moment to moment, season by season have captured my spirit.

This show for me is an opportunity to take the thread originating in the Heaven and Earth Project that I undertook in my last exhibitions to a deeper level. It is an exquisite luxury to explore landscapes both inner and outer and to develop new conversations with a great friend.

I spend a lot of time flyfishing, predominantly for trout, while keeping one eye on the fly and the other on interesting landscapes. I am attempting to share my visual and emotional experiences flyfishing within specific environments. Trout live in beautiful, wild places, swimming in clean water. There is often no noise except for the wind in the trees. I am usually either standing in the water, in waders, with the current flowing about me or fishing from a canoe….in both cases immersed in the biosphere. Trout waters are found in ‘wild’ places....even within ‘urban’ boundries.
Story telling is an important element in my work and will be carried forward by having an anecdotal explanation of the name of the fishing spot/landscape location that explains its significance to me. In addition to this, a hand tied fly (by me) will be attached to the framed description card which remains with the painting during a sale.
In creating these images there is the ongoing challenge of balance between “story telling” detail and the simplification and distillation of form.
I anticipate that this collaboration will allow us to tell a grander story together than individually. Tales of escape into the wilds, looking for rejuvenation by the spirit of the land and in search of one’s soul.....
