Downs Counselling Services
A little bit about me
My name is Sonia (Sidonia) Stiles and I am a trained counselling therapist with 14 years of experience and qualified. I have taken a break in the middle of my training as a youth worker in a specialist behavioural unit. This has benefited in the learning of working with young people and their families. As a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) I bring knowledge from both Person-Centred and Psychodynamic Therapy models (systemic Approach).
I have a level 5 Diploma in Systemic and Relationship therapy through RELATE Brighton and CPCAB courses, which qualifies me to work with families and couples.
I also hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Person Centered Therapy With Brighton University and Cruise Bereavement Care accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. This allows me to work in with 1-1 therapy address many complex issues from Anxiety to Depression and Bereavement issues as well as work with Couples and Relationships
Personal
I live in the South East and I have a partner and two adult children. We enjoy a healthy life style of moderate exercises, walks and relaxing times as we are lucky to live near the sea and downs.
I have a passion for human well-being and like to use what I have learnt to make a difference in people’s lives in an understanding that works with my clients. From the time I had my children and had to learn about little humans to the time I worked in Children Services, I have had a thirst for human development.
My compassion for helping people has always been part of my personality and my skill in keeping an open- mind has helped me address some of the worst of dilemmas in my work. I thank my wonderful teachers and my training in both the above approaches for teaching me these skills and for truly believing in me.
Being of ethnic upbringing I myself have had to address differences in cultures, belief systems and understandings. I understand that we are brought up differently in different countries and respect each individual cultural upbring because what we are tore and have to live are often our understanding of life. I understand that there is know right or wrong in belief systems only the ones that work for our own lifes and any that go against the law of the land. I should point out that this is not only looking at things from a religious point of view but from systems that we have grown up within our family home and that our forefathers have written into our life scripts, rather than being given the chance to chose our outcome.
My training has brought me a wealth of knowledge and understanding what is okay to some is not okay to others, but what is okay or not okay can only be defined through the listening and working with a professional that has the specialist training and know how to help, have clarity of our own understandings of our own learnings and meanings of the world. Sometimes who we are and have become are made up of the cultures and beliefs we have been brought up with rather than what we ourselves understand of the word and the people we want to be. Making sense of our understanding and beliefs helps us chose for ours selfs what might suit us indivally.
As you can see I am passionate about my work but it's not all work and know play. I also enjoy meeting people, playing tennis and walking on our Downs. Hences why my business is called Downs Counselling Services.
Professionally I am registered with the BACP and belong to a couple of platforms including The CPCAB, Counselling Directory and Psychology Today.
