Earlier today, we unveiled a preview of the all-new look and feel for Xbox Music at the annual Microsoft BUILD Developers Conference. This new Xbox Music experience, set to launch later this year with Windows 8.1, is entirely redesigned from the ground up and will bring music lovers closer to their favorite experiences.

The new Xbox Music app will feature a navigation column on the left side of the screen that provides the core experiences that music lovers access most. It will enhance usability and performance by showcasing:

Also demoed today at BUILD, the Windows team showcased new Bing search functionality for Windows 8.1 that will integrate seamlessly with Xbox Music. Using Windows Search, you will find musicians, bands and artists presented in a rich field of content, including top songs, albums, videos, images and relevant Web pages. If you select a track from the song list in the Bing results, it will immediately begin playing in the Xbox Music app. By collaborating with the Windows and Bing teams, Xbox Music on Windows 8.1 will make it easier than ever to find tons of great info about your favorite artists and instantly listen to the music you love without backing in and out of apps.

Windows 8.1 beta users can test out the new Xbox Music interface and Bing search integration beginning today. The redesigned app will be available in the 22 Xbox Music Pass countries when Windows 8.1 launches later this year on tablets, laptops and PCs.

No. When Microsoft announced the discontinuation of the Groove Music Pass streaming service on October 2, 2017, we notified customers that purchased music would be available to download until December 31, 2017. Unfortunately, that window has now passed. If you've already downloaded your music, you can listen to it on your PC with the Windows 10 Groove apps for PC, Xbox, and Windows Phone. You can also transfer your purchased music from one of your devices to another device for your own personal, non-commercial use.

Microsoft's attention to interface translates here with a beautiful, full screen photos when browsing the Microsoft music store. Artist bios and discographies are presented with large album art covers. The entire interface is built for touch with big buttons everywhere.

While the inclusion of Xbox Music is welcomed, Microsoft really needs to create a cross platform solution in order to woo non-Windows users with its excellent music subscription service. Windows 8 users will get 6 months of free music streaming and an ad-supported service after that.

So I decided to get Xbox Music Mixer so I can import my digital music library onto my Xbox, but I want to know how importing music works with it. Does it import the music onto the console's Soundtracks library itself, or does it only import music in a manner where it is only accessible through Music Mixer?

Pausing and playing music inside the Xbox Music app on Windows 8 takes a minimum of three clicks from the desktop. If I were to purchase a Multimedia keyboard with pause, play, fast forward, and rewind buttons, would they work while being at the Desktop?

If I have music playing in the Music app, these keys work as expected. When I use them I get visual feedback, too. In the top-left corner of the screen, where the volume display normally shows, information about what is playing is added whenever I press those multimedia keys on the keyboard.

The app is also associated with a now-discontinued music streaming service, Groove Music Pass, which was supported across Windows, Xbox video game consoles, Windows Phone, as well as Android and iOS.[3] As of 2014[update], The Groove catalogue had over 50 million tracks.[4][5] Its subscription service Groove Music Pass was officially discontinued on December 31, 2017, and the Android and iOS versions of the Groove Music app were discontinued in December 2018, restricting the player to its native Microsoft Store base.

Microsoft had previously ventured into music services with its Zune brand. The Zune Music Marketplace included 11 million tracks. The line of Zune players and Zune music store were somewhat unsuccessful, and the brand was largely discontinued at the beginning of the 2010s, although it continued to exist on different devices and the Zune Music Pass offered unlimited access to songs for US$9.99 per month.[6]

On October 2, 2017, Microsoft announced that its subscription service, Groove Music Pass, and music purchases on Windows Store would be discontinued after December 31, 2017, leaving support for playing music stored locally and on OneDrive. At the same time, Microsoft began advertising the competing service Spotify, displaying a banner ad for the service within the Groove Music user interface,[12] and offering the ability to migrate music collections and playlists to Spotify. As a side effect of the discontinuation, on May 31, 2018, Microsoft additionally announced that the Groove Music apps for Android and iOS would also be discontinued and cease functioning on December 1, 2018, with users being redirected to Google Play Music and iTunes Match for similar cloud synchronization functionality (the OneDrive app still offered limited music playback functions within).[13][14]

Users' purchased music, and playlists consisting of songs available on the service could be synced through OneDrive and accessed from multiple devices. Songs in a user's local library on a Windows 8.1 PC could be matched and made available to other devices if available on Groove Music Pass.[21][22] Custom "radio stations" could be generated using songs related to user-selected songs.[23] Songs could be downloaded for offline listening on smartphones.[24] Uploading of non-Groove music became available on Windows 10.[20]

On Sunday Microsoft launched the Xbox Music service across iOS and Android devices, as well as free streaming on Xbox Music via the Web around the world. The launch means many more people can now access a 30 million-song global catalog powered by the one service that integrates music experiences across your tablet, PC, phone and TV. All the music you love, every way you want it.

Looking forward, Xbox Music will continue to grow and evolve over the coming months. Microsoft will add Radio to the free Web player, a quick and dynamic way to personalize your collection, discover new favorites and create ultimate playlists by launching instant mixes based on your favorite artists. With unlimited skips and a view of the full recommended music stream, Radio will put you in control of your Internet radio experience.

In addition, Xbox Music will grow on Windows 8 when it adds the anticipated new Web Playlist tool this fall. The tool scans all the artists and music available on a given Web page and creates a custom playlist of all that music. Think about the Web page of your favorite radio station, or an upcoming music festival, and all the bands and songs included on that Web page. Web Playlist will identify all that music and create an instant, custom playlist inside Xbox Music with the simple touch of a button. Web Playlist along with Windows 8.1 will be released on Oct. 17.

In the coming months, additional updates for iOS and Android platforms will become available as well, including an offline mode that lets you save your music to your device for playback without an Internet or data connection.

I always seem to be missing album art from Xbox music (on Windows 8) and that for me is truly frustrating. I know MP3s are so 6 years ago but I still have a few albums that I took the time to carefully curate over the years and to see the patchwork of generic album covers in my collection in Xbox Music player is just a little annoying.

The expansion beyond Windows 8 devices and Xbox game consoles starting Monday is intended to bring new customers into the software giant's ecosystem of devices and services and could help it compete with other digital music offerings like Pandora, Spotify and iTunes. It's also an acknowledgement that the music service hasn't done much to drive sales of the Windows 8 operating system.

Most buyers of the new Windows 8 operating system discovered Xbox Music because it's the default player for music files that people have imported from elsewhere, according to Xbox Music general manager Jerry Johnson. Opening it up to the broader public would give more people a chance to see the benefits of having multiple devices linked to Microsoft's platform. Its music service, for example, will save favorites and playlists across PCs, Windows Phones and Xbox game consoles.

The tab just blinks/flashes once and stays on this page. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify, and then a clean uninstall when I saw it recommended on a different "Game Bar not working" post. I've restarted my computer multiple times, checked my location, Time & Date. I've set Spotify as the default music player, opened several MP3 files just to make sure it connected right (they didn't play, but they opened Spotify), I transferred ownership over TrustedInstaller to all users (it's a private device). I've tried every possible thing I've seen in these forums and through google searches--but nothing seems to work. It's been stuck this way ever since I first tried over half a year ago.
