Consistent with the literature on multimodal translation (Weissbrod and Kohn, 2019), I understand translation as consisting of interlingual, as well as intersemiotic, transfer. Due to the multiple channels through which meaning is communicated, ranging from speech bubbles, captions, line drawings depicting characters and scenes, ideophones including onomatopoeia, typeface and font size, the graphic novel is a hybrid, multimodal genre, requiring a similarly hybrid, multimodal translation approach.

Every page in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series contains a cartoon, which supplements the story by illustrating the preceding narrative. The cartoons may or may not contain balloons depicting thought, dialogue or sound effects. The lined pages and CoopForged font choice suggest that this is a handwritten diary. Some words are capitalised to convey emphasis. The narrative is in the first person and occasionally addresses the audience directly. Direct speech is confined to the speech bubbles in the illustrations. The syntactic style is characterised by short, simple sentences, and the register is informal including numerous colloquialisms.

I am overriding the paintComponent() method of a JCOmponent and drawing text in a window. I'm running on Ubuntu and using the font "Ubuntu Mono" (the default font for the Ubuntu text editor). When my java app displays the text, it looks wimpy and blurry. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: I changed the colors to match TextEditor's colors and that actually helped a little on the quality, but the characters are still so much thinner... you almost can't see a ".". In gimp I can recreate the TextEditor look by creating text w/ the right font w/ antialiasing on.

Specifially, "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Font" is the one I'm referring to. I want to use it when editing a PDF with the preview application, but it doesn't show up there. Have I just missed a step? How do I use a font from font book in preview?

On a system running macOS Ventura (13.3), I was also unable to use fonts in Preview.app that had recently been installed and were visible in Font Book.app, but noticed that some fonts I'd previously installed were available in Preview. Restarting both applications didn't cause them to show up in Preview.

After you open your file with Preview, go to Tools Menu/Annotate/Text. Click on text a toolbar will appear above your image. At the right end of the toolbar is an icon for text. This icon is a capital A and if you click on the arrow it will open a pane where you can select font and size. The pulldown should show all the fonts available. See the image below.

For those unfamiliar with the books, the Wimpy Kid books are written as the diaries of a slightly geeky middle schooler named Greg Heffley, complete with a font that looks like it was written by hand, and lots of sketches and cartoons. This format, and the episodic nature of the stories, makes the books particularly accessible for reluctant readers. The illustrations break the flow of the text, and there are no long chapters or dense pages. It's always easy to read a few more pages. But even more so than the format, I think it's Greg's voice that makes the books work for kids. I mean, this kid is a riot (examples to follow). The Last Straw had me giggling out loud on page after page.
