The virtual monopoly of Bajaj in the tuk tuk scene is India has now mercifully been broken with the advent of several new makers building more modern vehicles. Some of these are Piaggio, Atul, Mahindra and TVS. TVS tuktuks are more spacious and better finished than the Bajaj. Here is a TVS tuktuk in the southern Indian city of Madras (Chennai). For some reason, several TVS tuktuks bear the 'tourist friendly auto' (auto because tuk tuks are called autorickshaw in India) sign, wonder why. Madras (Chennai) tuktuk drivers are notoriously infamous for their sly and crude ways of ripping off the hapeless passenger and taking him for a right royal ride (literally). Tuk and van drivers are nothing but opportunists. Government should introduce more buses so the tuks and vans wouldn't be able to loot the tourists. If they charge reasonable prices then there will be enough private tours for them. What they expect is a gangster monopoly so they can loot tourists as they wish.

While it should be 'demand can grow due to these initiatives, let's applaud these newcomers and compete on best value for money'.
After having my tuktuks it would be really hard to do without them, I know there are a few people that look down their noses at me for driving it, but I really don't care. People should worry more about what they look like on the inside than the outside anyway. I do have a Fortuner for longer trips or for bad weather days, but the tuktuk gets more use by far.

Patong's police chief, Colonel Grissak Songmoonnark, says there are too many tuk-tuks on Phuket. There are about 500 in Patong alone, he says, not including unregistered vehicles. "Two hundred tuk-tuks would be enough for the whole island," he says.
