So, my wife and I want to turn the front part of our loft into a music room, sort of a combination listening/living room/project studio, rather than a traditional music studio. Some place we can sit and chill and listen to records, or I can practice/play instruments and record.

By now you will have a fairly good idea of how the different aspects of playing and tuning the parlor guitar both shapes and sculpts the style. It is a style that give emphasis to expressive, emotive playing and subtlety of interpretation.

Voice Camp is for any student who loves to sing and wants to spend time learning more! Students will have the opportunity to sing as a group as well as individually if they choose! The camp will introduce the basics of solfege singing, harmony, warming up, music reading, strengthening the voice, and more! In addition to group rehearsals, a private coaching session with our fantastic voice teachers will be provided! Parents are invited to join us for the performance on Friday at 11:30!

Adventure Piano Camp is for beginners who already have some experience under their belt. This camp will use fun, games, activities, and time at the keyboard to reinforce vocabulary, rhythm, and reading skills. In addition, campers will learn a piece of music to perform for family members at the end of the week with a small group of other students. This ensemble playing experience is vital for pianists who have very little opportunity to play with others. Combine this camp with Island Adventure Ukulele Camp for a full day camp experience with an hour for lunch and outside time between!

Creative Percussion is the camp for any student who love high-energy activities! We will be using buckets, drum sticks, Boomwhakers, shakers, cups, trash cans, tissue boxes, hand drums, and more to explore rhythm! All students are welcome to join this camp- it is not exclusive to percussionists! No experience is required, but even experienced students can benefit by improving rhythm reading comprehension, developing ensemble playing skills, reacting and responding to musical cues, and sparking creativity! Friday we will host a performance for families to watch our spectacular show. Combine this camp with Creative Percussion for a full-day camp experience brimming with creativity!

Island Adventure Ukulele Camp provides campers with the basic they need to strum and play basic ukulele music! Ukuleles will be available to borrow or purchase if campers do not have their own ukulele. Campers will learn four Ukulele pieces by Bob Marley and John Cruz. Campers can also expect games, crafts, and activities all centered around our theme. We will end the week with a luau style performance! Combine this camp with Adventure Piano Camp to create a full day camp with an hour for lunch in the middle!

As mentioned before, the vast majority of swing music is played by Big Bands, and thus swing has a greater emphasis on written compositions and arrangements than jazz, the genre that it evolved from. Band leaders use a variety of arrangement techniques to keep each song interesting, such as:

When it comes to these most basic elements of music, swing is smooth, easy listening, and relatively simple. Swing harmony uses simple chords with a clear homophonic texture. The melodies used in swing are always clear, lyrical, and memorable. Lastly, swing employs a solid beat with a strong dance groove.

Our Souderton, PA music studio provides both private and group music lessons for violin, viola, cello and piano. The lessons are structured to develop both music reading and listening skills. As the student progresses, groups and ensembles are utilized to motivate and develop sight reading skills.

Instruments such as the Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno 106 and Korg Polysix were bringing polyphonic synthesis to a mass market; Akai and Emu were doing the same with sampling, and with a little imagination it was possible to extract plausible rhythm tracks from a new generation of drum machines. There was a good selection of relatively affordable mixers to tie everything together, and even luxuries such as digital reverb were starting to become a realistic prospect for home-studio operators. For the first time ever, talented amateurs could create sophisticated recordings without the help of other musicians or engineers.

Notator (Creator is the same sequencer without musical notation) is a pattern-based sequencer with a very powerful Arrange mode for song construction. Becoming reacquainted with it for this project reminded me just what a powerful tool that mode is when building the early shell of a MIDI arrangement. No modern DAW is quite so fast at changing the length of whole sections or adding repeats with small variations. Huge structural changes can be made with a single numeric variable.

The vintage keyboards and drum machine that we were going to be using had not arrived in time for our programming session, so we were temporarily using a hardware General MIDI module for sounds. Nonetheless, we were careful to choose sounds that were as close as possible to the ones we would actually be using. Our GM module had a DX-style Rhodes and an analogue synth-like pad that would cover the work of the DX7 and Juno 106 that we were awaiting. The note allocations for the drums, which were to come from a Roland TR707, were reliably standard, although I miscalculated both the number of toms and crash cymbals, and forgot that the actual 707 ride cymbal would sound like a trash can being hit with... probably another trash can. We would rethink that one in the later programming.

The rise of DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software like Steinberg Cubase, along with compact, affordable recording equipment, has given aspiring artists increased opportunities to create full-blown musical productions in their homes (as opposed to being forced to go into professional recording studios) and to release them to a worldwide audience through social media and popular file sharing websites. The result? A brand-new genre of self-produced songs and artists that are calling the shots and cranking out hits from their bedrooms.

What resulted was a slew of home-recorded artists who became known for their subdued vocals and DIY techniques, and a seductive indie sound that focused on the intimacy of the artist rather than a full-scale studio production.

Chicago based bassist/composer/performer/pianist Austin Gray Williams derives style and aesthetic from many different styles of music and music culture. Recently graduated from The Chicago College of Performing arts with an MM in composition and having a Bachelors of Music from University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in music composition, Austin Williams has actively been performing and writing music on a high level for the past 8+ years. Working with high caliber individuals such as Josh Schwalbach (Minneapolis based bassist, classical), Adam Linz (Minneapolis based bassist, Jazz) and composition faculty such as Dr. Chia-Yu Hsu (University of Wisconsin Eau Claire) and Dr. Kyong-Mee Choi (Chicago College of Performing Arts) allowed Austin to understand what high levels of teaching involve and what it takes to be an effective teacher.
