Is that the basic premise? just a light-weight OS with some nice software specifically geared towards running VMs? Is there anything I cant do with Xubuntu+KVM+virt-manager that proxmox can? does proxmox have less overhead than running a normal OS + virt-manager?

According to the plugin's docs, want_proxmox_nodes_ansible_host: true sets the ansible_host to the IP address of the first network interface it finds, which in my case is enp0s31f6. So I've tried setting it to false and set the ansible_host in compose, but when I run --list on the inventory there's no ansible_host present:

Please note that proxmox-backup-client does notautomatically include mount points. Instead, you will see a shortskip mount point message for each of them. The idea is tocreate a separate file archive for each mounted disk. You canexplicitly include them using the --include-dev option(i.e. --include-dev /boot/efi). You can use this optionmultiple times for each mount point that should be included.

If you do not specify the name of the backup key, the key will becreated in the default location~/.config/proxmox-backup/encryption-key.json. proxmox-backup-clientwill also search this location by default, in case the --keyfileparameter is not specified.

You can also use proxmox-backup-client key to create an RSA public/privatekey pair, which can be used to store an encrypted version of the symmetricbackup encryption key alongside each backup and recover it later.

You should not need an encryption key to extract this file. However, ifa key exists at the default location(~/.config/proxmox-backup/encryption-key.json) the program will promptyou for an encryption key password. Simply moving encryption-key.jsonout of this directory will fix this issue.

One thing I'd like to add is that proxmox itself is capable of extracting a vma file.

I installed Sophos in proxmox with the ISO. Runs very well. Install the iso image with rufus on an usb stick. Configure usb on the vm. Configure the boot order of the vm. Start your VM on proxmox an it will boot from USB. Thats it.

If you want to create other VMs on that server then proxmox is a way to go. I have an LXC Container running a storage node and a USB drive mounted on the proxmox server itself.

Alternatively if you only want to run storage nodes, it might be simpler to run several storagenode docker containers directly on the Lenovo server (installed with your favorite Linux distro) using different ports for each container.

As i know, telegraf only for metrics from the proxmox, to have the log that you want to show in the Grafana, you just install Loki as log storage server and promtail to send the proxmox log to Loki.

What proxmox backups do you have?

proxmox vm shall be fine, but before fiddling more with the server you can make an extra backup just in case something goes south and a new proxmox install and backup restore is needed.
