Premam is the soundtrack album for the 2015 Malayalam-Tamil film of the same name directed by Alphonse Puthren and starring Nivin Pauly and Sai Pallavi. The original soundtrack and background score were composed by Rajesh Murugesan, who had collaborated with Puthren in the film Neram (2013).[1] Shabareesh Varma, beside singing, wrote the lyrics for eight of the nine songs.[2][3][4] One song "Rockaankuthu" which had lyrics written by Pradeep Palarr was sung by Tamil film composer Anirudh Ravichander.[5] The soundtrack album was released by the record label Muzik 247 on 14 February 2015 and topped the charts, with songs "Aaluva Puzha" and "Malare" became instant hits. The album was listed as the Best Malayalam Music Album of the year by Apple Music.[6]

Shabareesh commented that some of his film songs seemed to come true in real life. In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, he stated that when he wrote the song "Ithu Puthan Kaalam", he got much money to solve his financial troubles. However, when he wrote the second song "Kaalam Kettupoi", the recording studio due to heavy rains and lightning, but the laptop with the film's songs was safe with the music director Rajesh Murugesan.[4] The track "Scene Contra" was written as the eponymous title song for a short film, and was written within eight minutes. As some of his friends demanded that the song should be used in a film album instead of a short film. Then, Puthren suggested that the song could be used in Premam and Rajesh wrote background orchestration for this purpose.[11][12]

In September 2014, actor Murali Gopy recorded the song "Kalippu" during the time he worked on singing two songs simultaneously.[13][14] Similar to "Scene Contra", this song was also recorded for a short film under the title "Kalippu", but following Puthren's suggestions, this song was used in the film.[2] In addition to Shabareesh Varma, screenwriter-cum-lyricist Pradeep Palarr also penned one song titled "Rockaankuthu" recorded by Tamil film composer Anirudh Ravichander.[5]

The music album of Premam was launched on 14 February 2015 on the occasion of Valentine's Day through streaming media for digital download.[15] Followed by the digital release, the audio CDs were released through music stores on 28 February, with a record number of CDs sold on the first day of its release. All the audio songs released prior to the film release went viral on the internet.[16] In March 2015, video for the song "Aluva Puzha" sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan was released and became the chart topper.[17][18] As a marketing strategy the song "Scene Contra" was released later on 5 May and "Malare" was released on YouTube on 6 June.[19] The song received 1 million hits within 14 hours of release and trended on all social networking platforms.[20]

Writing for The New Indian Express, music critic Vipin Nair noted, "The Neram team's (Alphonse Puthren-Rajesh Murugesan-Shabareesh Varma) sophomore effort in Premam is almost as impressive, but for an occasional let down by the vocal choices".[21] Behindwoods in their first music review in Malayalam gave the album 3.75 out of 5 stars and stated "Fall in love with this wholesome gem!"[22] Karthik Srinivasan of Milliblog called the soundtrack in "as middling at its best", although the song "Malare" received praise.[23] Indiaglitz called the album "melodious and lyrically rich with seasoned singing" and gave a rating of 3.25 out of 5.[24] At the annual music review roundup published in The Hindu, Karthik listed Premam as the second best Malayalam soundtrack of 2015, after Charlie (composed by Gopi Sunder).[25] Apple Music selected it as the "Best Malayalam album" of 2015.[26][27] Sanjith Sreedharan of The Times of India listed the album as the "most popular Malayalam music album of 2015".[28] Anu James of International Business Times listed the songs "Malare" and "Aluva Puzha" in the second and third positions in the best Malayalam songs of the year.[29]

For the Telugu remake of this film under the same name, Murugesan remade four of his songs into Telugu, with "Evare" (the Telugu remake of the original song "Malare") retained its singer Vijay Yesudas, for the version.[31] The rest of the tracks were sung by different singers, with Naresh Iyer and Karthik contributing vocals to the album, whilst Gopi Sundar composed three new songs for the Telugu counterpart.[32]

The first look of Premam was unveiled on 24 January 2015, which featured a simple title logo designed in the shape of a butterfly.[56] In a unique promotional activity, the film does not have a trailer release instead, two video songs were released as a part of the film promotions. According to Gokul Nath, the head of social media marketing company DigiFaktory, for which Premam became their first venture, he stated that "From the very beginning, I and Alphonse [Puthren] had a need for an element of suspense. The aim was to present the film as the story of a young lover-boy and nothing else. Alphonse had a clear vision about the film, he knew how he wanted the film to be projected, what about it would draw audiences to the theatre."[57][58] However, a fan-edited trailer was released in November 2015.[59]

IB Times's reviewer Nicy V.P rated the film 5/5 and stated: "Premam is nothing but entertainment at its best and the movie deserves nothing less than a standing ovation." About the technicalities of the film, she said: "They are just flawless. From background score, songs, sound departments, art, cinematography, editing, costumes and others have come together to make Alphonse Putharen's dream a reality."[5]Veeyen of Nowrunning.com rated the movie 3.5 out of 5 and wrote: "'Premam' elevates Alphonse Puthren onto a pedestal of sharp film makers who have figured out the actual potential of the medium that cinema is. And in their competent hands long-standing tales assume ground-breaking forms and enthuse the viewers in ways and manners never seen before. Much more than an unabashed crowd-pleaser, which it surely is, 'Premam' is a bracingly alive film where almost everything, seems to have fallen right into place."[73] Sify.com rated the film 3.5 in a scale of 5 and said, "Premam is all for some genuine fun and perhaps, a few nostalgic moments as well for 80's and 90's generation. It's a lengthy ride for sure, but it will leave you wanting for more".[74] Paresh C Palicha of Rediff.com rated the film 3 in a scale of 5 and said, "With Premam, Alphonse Putheran proves that he has the knack of presenting themes that have blockbuster written all over."[75] Aswin J Kumar of The Times of India rated the film 3.5/5 and said that Premam is a "movie with a high likeability quotient because it unearths the beauty in trifles."[76] Litty Simon of Malayala Manorama rated 3 out of 5 stars and highly appreciated Alphonse Puthraren's direction, cinematography, music, lead performances, editing and humour. "The simple story is told with amazing visuals. It is humour at its best", "the director has rightly kept his word of expecting nothing big and aptly sticks with the tagline 'The second film in the history of world cinema with nothing fresh'", says the reviewer.[77]

S. R. Praveen of The Hindu said, "Alphonse Puthren's understanding of the medium is evident and he does not appear to try hard at any point." He praised Putharen's script, saying, "The strong point of Alphonse's script is its humour, which is very organic and does not stick out as a separate track."[78] Rejith RG of Kerala Kaumudi said, "Filled with unforgettable moments, characters and song sequences, Premam is a delight to watch. It's after a long time that we got to see such a hugely enjoyable Malayalam film."[79] Mythily Ramachandran of Gulf News called it "A delightful entertainer with Nivin Pauly in the lead" and said, "Premam is a fun film, a simple love story of the boy next door, like its tagline that reads 'nothing extraordinary in it'."[80] Pramod Thomas of The New Indian Express concluded his review saying, "'Premam' is a watchable flick for its realistic treatment of the plot, performance of the newcomers, wits, good songs and for Nivin Pauly."[81]

Premam opened to rave response from celebrities with prominent members from Tamil industry: notably Selvaraghavan,[123] Shankar[124] and Vijay[125] lauding Pauly's performance and direction. The lead actresses in Premam, Sai Pallavi,[126] Anupama Parameswaran and Madonna Sebastian became overnight celebrities and carved a niche for themselves in the South Indian film industry.[127][126] Following the 2015 Kerala local elections, the song "Malare" was used as a part of their political campaign.[128][129] The song "Malare" and one of its dialogues were featured in the most popular songs and dialogues of 2015 by The Times of India.[130] Aluva, where the film was shot became a tourist hotspots with 5,000 visitors per month came within three months after its release.[28] The black shirt and white mundu outfit worn by Nivin's character George and his gang during his college days became trending after the film's release and was sold by the textile stores in Kerala during Onam celebrations in colleges and schools.[131] e24fc04721
