Any number of fantasies about the future danced in my head back in the weeks leading up to the October 1st , 2013 release of NBA 2k14. I geared up for another year of playing a distasteful amount of virtual basketball in the well-worn confines of 2k's Association and My Player modes. But, while combing through all the previews surrounding the game I stumbled upon a new feature called, "LeBron: Path to Greatness".

Most sports fans like myself are suckers for speculation. The 24 hour media cycle demands that we daydream about these roster transactions and speculate on how all of the pieces will fit together. This sort of tea leaf divining has driven a huge part of the sports blog cottage industry that we all hastily consume every day. So, of course I was in on this mode from the word go.

This LeBron specific mode focused on two branching paths: 1. Stay with the Miami Heat and create a new dynasty. (Harrumph!) Or 2. Help LeBron travel the NBA landscape on a "Fantastic Journey" and face some ridiculous challenges that only basketball junkies like myself would entertain. Needless to say, the A button nearly broke in trying to see what was up with option 2.

About an hour in, I was thrust into an Eastern Conference Championship game against an unretired Allen Iverson and his Philadelphia 76ers. My nostalgia reliably overflowed but something was still missing. The Cleveland Cavaliers were still despondent in real life and no video game "What If?" scenarios were going to change that.

About a year later all that changed with James' letter and ensuing return. That Friday afternoon when I woke up from my nap to check my cell phone, which might has well been levitating because of all the vibration, felt like one of the scenarios from the game.

This postseason has been an emotional roller coaster that I have never seen before in my short time here in Cleveland when compared with family and friends who were born and raised here. We had Kevin Love get his arm broken, J.R. Smith get suspended, Derrick Rose punch the city in the gut, LeBron roundhouse Chicago's dreams the next game, Delly emerge and then bury the Bulls, Kyrie get hurt, More Delly dust-ups and The Cavs dismantle the Hawks in the last month.

I still cannot believe the Cavs are in the Finals. But, we are here now. The whole city sees we have a chance to win the title I've heard whispered of in hushed tones since the moment my mother moved back to Cleveland in the summer of 2004.

In year two of this grand experiment, the game has LeBron square off with the Golden State Warriors in a year where the media is fixated on his declining athleticism. You complete this challenge to show the doubters that greatness doesn't have an expiration date and even without the same firepower of past years, James can still get it done.

Who would have thought almost two years later that the Cavaliers would be staring down a similar obstacle in real life? Most experts have them taking 2 games at most in this series. I believe that just like in the game that LeBron's fantastic journey this year will have a happy ending.

So I know a lot of you fans out there are playing the Pistons in NBA 2k14. This year, the team is far more viable than before, and we have a lot of scoring options. But winning, especially in online, is still a challenge for me with this team. There are no guides for playing the Pistons out there, but I thought I might be able to get some feedback from the community. So the idea is, everyone put in your lineups and offensive gameplay and lets share and come up with good schemes to make this team a winner online ;)

I'll start with myself:

1. Most important thing I do is get Josh Smith out of the starting lineup. I noticed if I have all three playing together from the beginning I usually end up with a really tough time balancing minutes, and will have runs with neither of the big 3 on the floor. That means 0 rebounds, and little production.

2. Picks: Picks are a big part of the Piston's repertoire in real life and almost as much in my game. The only problem is that usually the game will have both bigs down at the post. When you do a pick with one, the other is still there along with a defending big. This makes it very tricky and less effective than it otherwise should have been. Drummond and Monroe also don't have enough strength to finish over defenders. another difficulty in game.

3. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: KCP, despite having a relatively low ranking is a very good player in 2k14. His shot is great so long as you run plays for him. Floppy is a staple of the Detroit offense. I have him running down at the baseline and coming up to the three point line. Good for at least 3-4 three pointers a game.

4. Inside outside: If you get Monroe going, his passing ability is really helpful to get outside shooters involved. Pass down to the block. Wait for a double team or an open perimeter shooter and pass to them. They will get a bonus accuracy because of Monroe's special ability (passing from the post)

1. In real life, the pistons channel most of their offense through Greg Monroe, usually from the high post where he can either drive to the basket, or pass to open cutters. Unfortunately, in 2k14, the playbook has him at the low post most of the time and he isn't a good post player in game which means we have to rely on a lot of garbage points for him. While garbage points are a big part of his production, his passing ability and driving are limited if he has to stick down low.

2. The Pistons playbook: A lot of the plays in there just aren't good for this Pistons team. There aren't many pick and rolls in the playbook. Horns I think will be a big thing this year and is a play I would love with this team as it opens up a lot of possibilities and it opens up space for Drummond or Monroe or Smith to get down low, but barely features in the playbook.

3. Stats: A few of the stats really limit production. Post play is really underrated for monroe. Strength is horrible for our big three which means finishing over others is difficult (Josh Smith, Drummond, and Monroe strength in the 60s less than Bynum? Come on!). Drummond needs to have better dunking and finishing, because he is really one of the better posterizers finishers in the NBA, and this just doesn't translate at all into the game. In exchange, they can tone down on Smith's shooting for example which I feel is a bit overrated in game.

(CBS News) Few series have had as much success as the NBA 2K franchise has enjoyed this console generation. It has been lauded as one of the most faithful recreations, nailing the little things like few sports franchises have done. With this console generation giving way to the next, 2K sports looks to further cement its reputation as the go-to NBA simulation. Its latest entry in the series - NBA 2k14 - adds a new mode, brings back a heavily requested one and further enhances the gameplay that has become its bread and butter. But with the developers preparing a next-gen version of 2K14, is the current-gen release a worthy upgrade?

2K Sports landed LeBron James as its cover athlete for 2K14, and the developers leveraged LeBron James' involvement. With James about to become a free agent again this summer if he chooses to opt out of his current deal, 2K Sports thought it would be a great time for you to choose where The King's next destination should be. But you don't have total freedom in this mode. You can select to stay with the Heat or select a "Fantastic Journey," which has LeBron bolting the Heat but you can't decide where he goes next. In my experience, LeBron chose to go with the Knicks, but I've seen other scenarios where he's chosen to return to the Cavs.

In Path to Greatness, you step in LeBron's shoes and play key games during this season with the Heat. During these games, there goals to attain or obstacles to overcome. For example, one game both of the Heat's point guards are injured, tasking LeBron to play point guard. You are graded after each matchup, providing some replay value for those who want to ace each contest. But the scoring system isn't very clear. When I was asked to play point with LeBron, I finished with 30 points 30 assists (tying an NBA record) and 12 rebounds, but was awarded only two out of three stars. It's fun to be in the driver's seat of LeBron's career and provides a bit of a story to follow in a genre that rarely offers it.

But the mode would be nothing without solid gameplay, and the NBA 2K series has never struggled with that. The developers have said they added 3,000 new animations, and it's evident immediately. There's a level of physicality that the series has needed that has been added this year. Contact around the rim has been beefed up, providing yet another level of realism the series has always strived for. The blocking system has been overhauled, allowing for more highlight rejections. Defense has also been amped up on the perimeter, making it more difficult to get to the paint.

But don't think offense was neglected. Passes feel much more crisp, and the players space the floor better. This combination opens up the drive-and-kick game, a staple for most NBA offenses. The zippier passes help offensive players hit open teammates quicker, providing more of a window to get off a clean look. 2K has added layer after layer of gameplay tweaks over the years and 2K14 is the culmination of that. The three-man booth of Kevin Harlan, Steve Kerr and Clark Kellogg returns and calls the action impeccably. They mix in numerous anecdotes about players, coaches and executives while also staying on top of the on-court action. But there is some jarring commentary about Gatorade that feels more like an ad than in-depth analysis, which pulls you out of the experience since real broadcasts shy away from such antics. 152ee80cbc
