I've figured out how to get Skype and OneDrive back (standalone versions of those can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site), but I cannot figure out how to get OneNote back. The standalone package on Microsoft's site as well as the version that comes with Office 365 is OneNote 2016, which is not the same version. All the Googling I do on the subject just keeps regurgitating Microsoft's instructions on how to get it from the app store. I really do not want to have to reinstall Windows from scratch on all these computers.

Let me start with the good one: The OneNote version for Windows that is installed with MS Office (2010, 2013, 2016) lets you freely choose the storage location for your notebook files. So you can keep them on a local drive or a network share inside your organization. An alternative would be an on-premise Sharepoint server, which also works rather well at least with OneNote 2016 for Windows and OneNote Online (in the browser). You can even share those notes with other users or devices (as long as they run the Office version of OneNote for Windows) if you set the proper access rights to the SharePoint library or network share.

So if you are reading this article hoping for a workaround to use any OneNote app without a Microsoft account, an Office 365 subscription and OneDrive, I am sorry to disappoint you. I wrote this mainly to confirm that there is absolutely no way around these prerequisites.

Apparently, you can edit existing notes or add new ones without an active internet connection on any OneNote app and system. So the notes must be stored on the device, right? Yes, they are. But this offline cache is in a special format (binary files, all very split up) and only used by OneNote to temporary work with a copy to synchronize the content with the actual storage location later, when an internet connection is re-established.

So the point is: If you want to use OneNote on Mac, iOS, Android, Windows 10 mobile or the Windows 10 UWP app, you have to store your notebooks on OneDrive or OneDrive for Business. Again, sorry if this is bad news.

The second reason is of a technical nature. Because of the way how OneNote synchronizes data (only updating changes to single objects inside a file instead of the whole file), a special protocol is needed. This is called COBALT or MS-FSHTTP by Microsoft and is only supported by Sharepoint and OneDrive. Even locally stored notebooks (with OneNote for Windows/desktop only) are handled in a way that is close to that COBALT protocol. I bet this could not be easily reproduced on the MacOS or iOS file systems. And given the first reason, it is very unlikely that Microsoft would put any effort in it.

Reinstall done without previous settings (KAV from scratch). Microsoft Store working, OneDrive and OneNote too. Before the reinstall, I've noticed that Spotify wasn't working too. Now everything is fine.

It is a not critical thing since I have been able to get along for several years without OneNote features but it is super annoying when I want to see what I wrote in the client OneNote file in 2011 when OneNote was still a true desktop application. Much of the client files that are old are still pertinent today. I can open old Excel and Word documents from decades ago just not OneNote files.

But the above one works in OneNote desktop and not for the "OneNote for Windows 10" app (OW10A); how do I make it work for that store app? I am not able to find .exe for the store app to mention it in the above script.

I was able to upload the onenote files onto the box only when they arrived there then they became a file of nothing. My company is trying to use the box to upload onenote files to the box.com so that people from all over can open those onenote files from anywhere with no problem. I did notice that it really did not like .one file format and I was wondering if onenote was compatable in anyway since I have synced onenote files onto box and tried to get them off and it came back out unreadable.

Can I sync OneNote files over Box in the way that this can be done on SharePoint or OneDrive? I want to use OneNote to store info and have everyone access and update it via Box. Sounds like that's not possible though? ?

Just wanted to confirm you haven't seen conflict errors with this? It seems like this would be ripe for having conflicts, especially since OneDrive doesn't let you save the 'full onenote' file locally, it only saves a stub file on the local computer.

We are in the process of moving off of fileshares and onto Box. We have one file that about 100 people access from their computers. We have uploaded it to Box and users are syncing, but there is a concern about permissions. Since a user must be a Co-owner or Editor in order to sync, then that also means the user has the ability to edit and delete the file. When this file was on the file share, most users only had read-only access thus eliminating the risk of accidental edit or removal of the file. Are there any recommendations for how this group can continue to see up-to-date info in the Notebook, but without having the ability to edit and/or delete? I appreciate your help.

Please note that Pandoc has some limitations for example it does not convert checklists they will appear just as plain text. Any HTML that uses odd Microsoft formatting or class names may not appear either. Most of the work in the Synology HTML data is cleaning the HTML and recreating HTML without things Pandoc can not understand. This is where most programs making conversions struggle as you have to fix each issue before conversion, or manually convert it to markdown and add it back in after conversion (like I have to do with checklists).

Hi Vivek! The credentials are not stored in the drawing, the prompt for credentials is from OneDrive itself, and it is similar to using the 'Keep me signed in' button on the web. The preferred way of using OneNote is using cloud-connected notebooks as that helps retain your data wherever you go, hence the choice for onedrive cloud storage. Once you are signed in, the OneNote Online at the top right (you may have to scroll) will show the signed in user.
