Though the franchise is based around ninjas, Naruto is known for its many liberties with the way of the shinobi. From bombastic attacks to colorful clothing, the characters often seem antithetical to everything ninjas are supposed to represent. Nevertheless, there's a lot of historical inspiration behind Naruto, namely when it comes to one of the most prominent characters.

Sasuke Uchiha is Naruto's rival and one of the most popular ninjas in the series. Likewise, Hiruzen Sarutobi is the Hokage who rules Naruto's home village for the story's initial arcs. While these two characters are not related in the show, they both share a name with one of the greatest ninja legends in real-life Japan. Here's how the tale of Sarutobi Sasuke inspired the characters of Naruto.

Appearing in fiction throughout the Meiji period and beyond, the legendary ninja known as Sarutobi Sasuke was a seemingly fictional character. Despite that, it's believed he was at least based on real-life people, though his literary exploits were no doubt sensational. The leader of the Sanada Ten Braves ninja group, Sarutobi is in many ways analogous to Paul Bunyan or other Western tall tale folklore heroes. Possessing great power and incredible ninja abilities, the warrior would more than live up to his name, which translates as "monkey jump". This was represented in his apparently being raised by the apes, thus acquiring their unique brand of agility through osmosis.

Long before anime and manga were a thing as they're now known, Sarutobi's legend inspired a slew of ninja fiction in Japan during the early 1900s. The name was even used for the sports game show known in the West as Ninja Warrior (Sasuke in Japan). This would see generations become familiar with the hero, including Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. Given how ubiquitous he is, it's no surprise that the supposedly fictional ninja was looked to in the concept of various characters from Naruto.

Like his namesake, this powerful and wizened ninja had ties to apes, being able to summon the monkey king Enma. It's later revealed that Hiruzen is the father of Asuma Sarutobi and the grandfather of Konohamaru Sarutobi, with Hiruzen's dad actually named Sasuke Sarutobi. In fact, Sasuke Uchiha's parents named him after this Naruto universe version of Sasuke Sarutobi in the hopes he'd become just as great of a ninja.

This isn't the only example of the series incorporating versions of folklore heroes, with Naruto's mentor Jiraiya being another take on the concept. His rivalry with Orochimaru (who, along with Jiraiya, was a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi) even homages his namesake fighting snakes. By incorporating these elements, Naruto is can be both an entertaining and educational anime, enlightening viewers via a fun take on iconic Japanese ninja legends.

The Naruto series is enormously popular worldwide. Given that, it's no surprise that fans of the spiky-haired blonde ninja-in-training would love the chance to actually play him in a video game. Unfortunately the history of Naruto games is one that consists primarily of a string of mediocre-at best titles. Still, hope springs eternal and with each new Naruto game released, there's always the chance that this one will be that ultimate Naruto game that you've been waiting for. Alas, Naruto fans will have to keep waiting because Naruto Shippuden: Legends: Akatusuki Rising, the latest in the series, is yet another sub-par brawler that seems to re-tread the same ground with similarly pedestrian results.

The "haven't we been here before?" quality begins with the game's storyline. It follows the Kazakage Retrieval story arc in which Naruto returns to his village after a few years absence to meet up with his teacher and some old friends. Of course, it wouldn't be a day in the life of Naruto if something horrible didn't happen so that Naruto and his pals could bust out their cool ninja moves. Sure enough, when a couple of Akatsuki's followers manage to capture Naruto's friend Gaara, it's up to Naruto and his friends to rescue Gaara. If this sounds familiar, it's because it is familiar. It's pretty much the same story arc featured in Ultimate Ninja 4: Naruto Shippuden. Fans of that game who are hoping for a different perspective on the Naruto story based on the title (perhaps delving into the history and rise of the popular Akatsuki villains) will actually get a bit of fan service through the Akatsuki mode. This mode allows you to play as the bad guys capturing Sand Village and is a nice addition to the game. Unfortunately, you'll have to trudge through the same old repetitive story to get to it and the actual mode isn't that long.

The heart of the game takes place in the Scenario mode, which is a linear series of missions that follows the storyline of the show. As you complete missions in this mode, you'll unlock others things to do. These include the Mission mode where you can go on stand-alone missions that are rated in terms of difficulty to help the citizens of Leaf Village and the Survival mode where you'll have to defeat a certain number of enemies. Items, skill scrolls, and money acquired in these missions can also be used in the games store to kit out the many unlockable ninjas you can use. This level of customization and unlockable content is one of the game's biggest strengths. Put simply, there's a lot of game in here, and if you're a completionist looking for the kind of game where there's always another glittering prize on the horizon, Akatsuki Rising has you covered.

At a desolated beach, a night-time battle rages between the sand ninjas and bulky, robot-like, armored warriors. Gaara and the group of sand ninjas gain the upper-hand and when the remaining warriors begin to retreat back into the ocean, they shoot flares into the night to reveal a large warship waiting just offshore.

The legendary Sannin, some of the most iconic characters in Naruto: Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru are more than their appearances in Naruto. The Sannin exist within the pages of a Japanese folk tale spanning more than 43 books called The Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant. The Sannin in Naruto share so many similarities with their counterparts of the same name in The Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant that one group may not exist without the other.

The Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant is a story about how Jiraiya: the master of toad magic, and Tsunade: the slug princess team up to defeat the evil snake spirit. Naruto is a story about how Jiraya: the toad sage enlists the help of Tsundade: the slug queen to defend the village of hidden leaves against the evil snake-like ninja: Orochimaru.

Stretching across 72 volumes, the manga follows Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja with big dreams of becoming a Hokage. The plot takes readers on a thrilling adventure of self-discovery, as Naruto learns to master his ninja skills and overcome numerous challenges along the way.

The Naruto anime has a total of 720 episodes, covering the entire storyline of Naruto Uzumaki from start to finish. Each episode is filled with action, drama, and suspense, as Naruto navigates the challenges of being a ninja and pursues his dream of becoming Hokage.

The storyline of Naruto Shippuden expands on the initial Naruto series, showcasing a more mature and refined approach to the characters, themes, and struggles they face. Naruto Uzumaki grows as a ninja, gains new abilities, and faces formidable enemies in his quest to become the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village. 2351a5e196
