A couple weeks ago, I shut my 2015 MBP to allow to charge, checked on it later in the day and was greeted by a grey/black screen with a prohibitory symbol. However, aside from the fact I never set a password lock on the drive, I am not even able to attempt to enter a password to unlock it--I cannot successfully click in the text box to enter anything. I do have a Time Machine backup from 1-2 weeks before this happened. However, the backstory is I was rehabbing a 2009 Macbook because why not and I had moved some files over from the 2009 MB to the 2015 MBP in prep for installing a smaller-size SSD in the 2009 MB. I believe I found it was locked in Disk Utility (the drive appeared greyed out and I was unable to mount it). It's also possible I found it was locked when trying to re-install Mojave over the internet--the drive was recognized but unable to be unlocked, so unable to have the OS installed.

A greyed out device in Disk Utility usually means it is not mounted. If Disk Utility cannot mount the drive, did you look at the details listed under the Hide Details > button?
