When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come on you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations, and when you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back.

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. - James 5:11

There are many things that come to mind when considering the book of Job, most of which are not centered upon God's compassion and mercy. I believe the narrative of Job's suffering is a narrative of mercy and compassion of a frequent kind. I have heard many people say that the book of Job brings into question the goodness of God. I have also heard it said that Job is not where we draw our theology from and that Jesus is. On the contrary the gospel of John tells us that Jesus is in every letter of Job when it says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...the Word became flesh and dwelt among us"(John 1:1, 14).

I read the book of Job and I cannot help but to see the glory of Jesus, His death, and resurrection. I don't need to stretch the story of Job to make it cruciform. It is extraordinary good news granted we have the proper perspective. Paul said, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."(2 Tim 3:16) Through the lens of the New Testament I begin to see Job's suffering as the exhibition of God's compassion and mercy, as the manifestation of Christ, and as inspired by God, profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. It is unavoidable. It is in the Canon of scripture on purpose, to crucify our foolish man-centered views of God. We are incomplete as men of God if we will not wrestle with the implications of this marvelous book.

God does not wait for Satan to speak first, but thrusts forth to question Satan and his finite knowledge of a righteous man named Job. The origin of Job's suffering is first and foremost the hand of God for His purposes of eternal glory, compassion, and mercy. This causes me to believe that perhaps Satan had been summoned by God rather than approaching Him as a rogue entity. How many of us are unaware that much of our present suffering originates from a similar question being asked in the heavenlies? Would we not be benefited to believe that those things which God has done so gloriously in the past He presently does with perfectly intact purposes? Likewise I urge us to believe that this same God who had turned Satan's attention to Job likewise turns Satan's attention to modern saints for His purposes of mercy and compassion. How much more gloriously would we endure suffering if we could comprehend that perhaps God had summoned Satan and said of us, "have you considered my servant?"

The plainest teaching of verse 12 is that God gives Satan rights over specific portions of our lives for His divine ends, namely His glory and our satisfaction in Him as we read further in Job and throughout the whole of scripture. This is how James can point to the compassion and mercy of God seen in the book of Job. God is ensuring that Job sees Him as the only satisfaction in this life and the next.

O God, whose mercies are without number and whose treasure of goodness is infinite, graciously increase the faith of the people consecrated to you, that all may grasp and rightly understand by whose love they have been created, through whose Blood they have been redeemed, and by whose Spirit they have been reborn. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In v. 3-4, he shouts out, "Yahweh is great and is highly praised; His greatness is unsearchable. One generation will declare Your works to the next and will proclaim Your mighty acts." And v. 7-9 describes what the older generation will say to the younger: "They will give a testimony of Your great goodness and will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in faithful love." Notice v. 9: "The Lord is good to everyone . . . "

Down in v. 15-17, we read more about His goodness: "All eyes look to You, and You give them their food in due time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all His ways and gracious in all His acts." Every relationship, every job, every tree, every taste of food that pleases us, every birdsong, every friend and flower and field are a reminder of His compassion for us. Look in every corner of this world and every part of your day and you will find the overflow of His generosity, if you will only begin to look for it.

Psalm 107 is totally devoted to this theme, and opens with joy: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe . . . " Then the psalmist describes four different scenarios where God graciously steps in to reveal His goodness. I don't have time to unfold each one, just touch on it:

Colossians 1 reminds us that Jesus "is the image of the invisible God" (v. 15) and that "God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him" (v. 19). Jesus is God's goodness in the flesh. He demonstrated God's desire to pour out blessing and help and deliverance on us in three ways.

But hear me: He is there for you. Ps. 31:19-20 says, "How great is Your goodness that You have stored up for those who fear You, and accomplished in the sight of everyone for those who take refuge in You. You hide them in the protection of Your presence; You conceal them in a shelter from the schemes of men, from quarrelsome tongues." God has great goodness stored up for you. Take your refuge in Him. Rest there. He is up to more than you know, and has hidden help that only comes when you give it up to Him.

We have to remember each of us carries the richness and the burdens of our personal history; this is what makes us different from everyone else. Our life, with its joys and sorrows, is something unique and unrepeatable that takes place under the merciful gaze of God. This demands, especially of priests, a careful, profound and far-sighted spiritual discernment, so that everyone, none excluded, no matter the situation a person is living in, can feel accepted by God, participate actively in the life of the community and be part of that People of God which journeys tirelessly towards the fullness of his kingdom of justice, love, forgiveness and mercy.

Jesus came as the express image of God manifesting the very heart of our Father. He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil. (Acts 10:38) Jesus corrected religion, tradition, doubt, unbelief, confusion, fear, every condition of man that affected his well being and wholeness in order that they might have life and have it more abundantly all because of the goodness of God.

And Christ went to the cross because of His hesed. His loyalty to His people, His kindness and mercy toward them, was so unshakable that He endured the very worst that we could devise for Him, so that we could be clothed in his perfect hesed faithfulness, and be credited with it, as if we have lived out his perfect life of hesed ourselves.

Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. e24fc04721
