When Yanyan Zhou told me she wanted to get a cat, I was skeptical. As a previous cat owner, I know cats can be hard work, often in unexpected, sometimes annoying and frequently destructive ways. (I lost countless vases, pots and picture frames due to frisky cats.) But Yanyan was determined; she wanted a forever friend.

When I came back half an hour later, Yanyan was almost done buying all the supplies and finishing up the paperwork. She was at the register with her yet-to-be-named giant kitten, who was shockingly not in a cage. Yanyan was holding him as she attempted to fill out paperwork.

She began to practice to pass the time initially and stave off boredom, but eventually Yanyan found that she really enjoyed the art. In her spare time, she creates pieces such as wallets, pillowcases, and wall art. Smaller pieces of embroidery are completed entirely in her hands, using only the cloth, thread, and needles. Larger pieces require an embroidery hoop. Some of the pieces of art Yanyan has created take only a few hours of work. Others may take up to a month of dedication.

Born in 1988 in Sichuan, China, Yanyan Huang grew up in the United States and now lives and works between Beijing, New York, and California. Deriving influence from diverse cultures and time periods, her work maps out an elaborate array of temporal geographies, identities, and relationships.

Inflected by her art education in the USA and traditions of Euro-American abstraction as much as by xie yi ink painting, her works appear joyfully spontaneous, but this belies the deep knowledge and surety that lies behind her mark-making.

Huang plays with varying viscosities and degrees of transparency, with stencilled hard-edges intersecting with her curving, fluid sweeps of lilac, crimson and green. These paintings are filled with lyrical, flowing movement.

Could tell me about any differences between Chinese clothing and fashion traditions in Hong Kong as opposed to mainland China? Is there anything unique to Hong Kong reflected in your work for YanYan?

I created a blog on Tumblr in my second-to-last year of high school, and after I graduated, I interned and assisted whoever I could. I worked about four jobs back then, and then eventually moved to New York a year and a half out of high school to do some more interning. By then I knew I wanted to work in fashion.

I was jobless when I first came back to Sydney, so I reached out to a few brands I already had a relationship with and started shooting content as a face and as the brains behind the project. From coming up with the idea, producing, executing, editing and curating a story, I slowly started falling in love with the whole process. Basically, I did anything and everything I could to gain experience and have some kind of work behind me. My work gradually grew from there once other brands started to see what I was creating.

Welcome to The Green Scene. Twice a week during the month of April, we're highlighting the designers and brands working to make the world of fashion and beauty a greener, more sustainable place. The brands to support are the ones making a difference; check back every Tuesday and Thursday to meet your new favorites.

Chan, the former director of knitwear at rag & bone, and Chung, a Hong Kong designer, have been longtime friends. The two dreamt of starting a company together as kids but didn't actually begin work on their direct-to-consumer premium knitwear brand until about two years ago, when both were looking for a "life change," as Chan calls it.

When both designers first entered the fashion industry over a decade ago, sustainability wasn't really a thing. "It was more of a concept or gimmick," says Chan. "It's really hard for bigger companies to change overnight, even if they want to. It's hard to put in those changes without affecting the process or pricing, and it's hard to ask the customer to choose. "

I'm a PhD student at Brown University studying computing education. I'm advised by Kathi Fisler, and I'm a member of BrownPLT. My current project is on socially responsible computing. I'm interested in designing and evaluating different tools and pedagogy methods to teach undergraduate students to think about the social impacts of the software systems that they build and interact with.

Before coming to Brown, I did my undergrad at Swarthmore College, with a major in computer science and minor in educational studies. I was very fortunate to work with Professor K. Ann Renninger, and got a taste of doing educational psychology and learning science research.

Last year, I started to become interested in usability and design. I took two courses in two different departments: Human Factors from Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences, and User interfaces and User experience from Computer Science.  These two courses got me thinking:  Why are some things hard to use?  Is it just me or do other people experience the same thing?  How can I better describe the usability issues?  What usability design principles can be applied to improve the tools and websites?  Below you can find some of my course projects that explore these questions around usability.

Regarding opening a new horizon in the field of Western art collection, the Chinese collectors are facing choices that are much more complex than in the past. For example, when faced with Qi Baishi and Picasso works of a similar price, how does one choose? This is a very interesting topic that involves the authority to appraise, value judgments, price comparison, market conditions, and more. These are the issues we need to make an effort to fulfill before answering.

The tours generally involve going around a variety of different farms in the district involved in the OAN. It is a fantastic network that encourages strong relationships of learning and growth between all types of farming people.

My sister and I were lucky enough to be two of 16 young women from around Australia to participate in the AWiA (Australian Women in Agriculture) leadership and decision making course in Canberra. A fantastic organisation raising the profile of Women and the next generation in Agriculture. For me it was a real eye opener, it was such an empowering thing to meet and network with other like-minded young people from around the country, this experience renewed my confidence and hope for the future of Agriculture in Australia. There are many supportive organisations out there for young people interested in Agriculture, this is one of them.

The next step is getting more people (like you readers!) to be involved in the diverse career pathways agriculture encompasses. From finance, marketing & politics to farming the land, environmental work and scientific research. Or even just going out and visiting a farm, seeing how it works and what life is like out in the country.
