Golf scores record the number of strokes used to get the ball in the hole. The expected number of strokes varies from hole to hole and is called par (i.e. 3, 4, or 5). Each score's name is based on the actual strokes taken compared to par:

I work for a small non-profit organization and we are looking for a way to quickly tally scores and provide a few statistics for donors at our annual golf tournament. I thought this would be fairly easy, but I'm struggling to come up with a database schema to capture the scores. I can't figure out how the player's score relates to the specific hole on the course.

Perhaps make the Scores table a m:n join table between Players and Holes to capture each player's score on each hole. This is depicted on the diagram below. To get the score for a round you'd sum all scores for all holes with a specific CourseId, for a specific event.

I also denormalised it a little, adding a total score to the Rounds table. This means that you don't need to SUM() the individual scores every time to get the tallies for each Player's Round. That's just a suggestion for performance optimisation.

I am designing a database to store golf scores and other statistics about each hole or round, but am having difficulty in knowing which method will be most efficient. My question centers around structuring the tables for courses and rounds. Here's two options, although I'm not sure if there's a better third. I'm using mySQL 5.1.63 and PHP 5.2.17. Tables in CAPS for readability.

Spikemark, created and founded by former collegiate player and coach, Derek Freeman, provides a modern new website and mobile app that was designed to meet the needs of collegiate golf at every level. Spikemark provides tournament scoring, real-time leaderboards, detailed statistics, in-depth analytics, and media through a platform that includes easy-to-navigate screens allowing users to keep track of their favorite teams and players. Spikemark also provides real-time access to team schedules, up-to-date results and the latest rankings for the college golf community.

Over the last few weeks, following an approach by Spikemark for assistance, Clippd has worked to provide the infrastructure necessary to compile, validate and publicize fall 2023 results from all Division I, II and III men's and women's golf competitions.

Mark Broadie, a pioneer in the world of golf analytics, will be the ranking authority and is working with the Clippd team to provide individual and team rankings following the conclusion of the fall season.

"We are confident that Clippd will lead us through technology challenges faced during the 2023 fall season, and serve as a valuable partner into the future, as well," said NCAA Senior Vice President of Championships Joni Comstock. "The goal of this partnership is to fully deliver the quality services that our student-athletes and the college golf community deserves."

Why? Because time is the most precious resource on this Earth, and is certainly the most important thing for golf scores. If you want to get to a certain level of play, time is going to be your biggest limiting factor. This will greatly influence what your expectations should be.

This is also another category that a majority of golfers will fall into. You might have a Sunday group that plays once a week like clockwork, and somewhere during your week you can carve out 2-4 hours for some practice time.

Progress in golf occurs in small steps. You make small breakthroughs, and then maybe you have a setback or two. But if you can keep practicing and playing a decent amount you will see small incremental progress that will build over time.

A lot of golfers fall into this category in terms of the amount of time they can dedicate to their games. I believe if you can focus your time on where you can impact the most amount of change (mental game/strategy & short game) you will see results rather quickly.

If you are really serious about improving your golf swing I would suggest working with a qualified teaching professional. They can accelerate your progress by evaluating your current swing, and giving you a plan on how to reasonably fix it.

On top of practicing, you need to play golf quite a bit too. You need to be on the course dealing with the pressures of a live round. I believe this is where most learning takes place because practice can only take you so far.

So take a look at these three categories. See which one you fall into in terms of the amount of time you can dedicate to golf. There may be some exceptions, but I would advise adjusting your expectations based on how much time you have to practice and play.

I am trying to keep a modified golf handicap for my group. We will use an average of the 6 lowest scores from a group of 15 scores. I need a formula that will look at 15 cells and pick out the lowest score, the 2nd lowest, etc for a total of 6. I can them sum and divide those 6 cells.

However, when snowbirds make scores on a golf course in an area observing an active season they must be posted for handicap purposes, even if the golf club where the player receives the Handicap Index is inactive (e.g., a golfer from New York plays golf in Florida in January).

Often, golfers who seasonally relocate are also members of another golf club. These players are considered multi-members. In this situation, the player should be registered through the Allied Golf Association or computation service as such. This ensures all scores at all clubs are entered into one scoring record.

In 2022, golfers have a wealth of options for gaining course knowledge. In spite of this, most players choose to learn only from the school of hard knocks. Be smarter than those people.

WA Golf is one of 41 golf associations in the U.S. that has an inactive posting season during the winter months. This is because of the general change in course conditions in our region that would adversely affect the course ratings.

Each course is rated under the Course Rating System part of the World Handicap System. The single largest factor that impacts a course rating is distance. How far a ball will travel in the air and how much roll it gets on the ground are heavily impacted by weather. To create a standard course rating, each course is rated as if it is July 4th (or, high summer), and the difference in course conditions in our region between summer and winter are too great and would negatively affect the majority of golfers and their handicap. There are many courses in our region that drain well and stay in good condition for the winter months, but we cannot evaluate this on a course-by-course basis. The USGA GHIN system does not allow for course-by-course determinations during the inactive season.

The Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) is a statistical procedure that compares the scores submitted by players on that day against expected scoring patterns. The PCC is not designed to correct for the larger condition changes like we have in the winter months.

We are working with the USGA to add a feature to the GHIN system to allow members to post scores during our inactive posting season. These scores would be used in a temporary handicap during this time of year and then removed as we enter the active posting season.

Founded in 1922, Washington Golf (formerly known as WSGA) has grown into one of the largest amateur golf associations in the United States providing a multitude of member benefits and services to more than 92,000 golfers, 520 member clubs, and 260 golf facilities throughout Washington and Northern Idaho.

The active handicap posting season in the NYSGA region begins April 15 and ends Oct. 31. Only scores from areas that are still in active seasons can be posted to your handicap record outside of the NYSGA's active season. Learn more about Active/Inactive Posting Seasons.

A) Although the majority of Member Clubs do allow their members to post scores online, there are some clubs that prefer to manage the process at the club level. This allows the golf professional and handicap chairperson to better manage the input of scores. If a club is interested in activating the online score posting option, the handicap chairperson should contact Mass Golf Support at ghin@massgolf.org.

What's it like being the son of legendary golfer John Daly? In this episode of the Hog Pod, we sit down with John Daly II right before the PNC Championship to find out. Plus, we get his thoughts on Charlie & Tiger Woods and his emerging career as a Razorback.

Dr Browne, Secretary of the Great Yarmouth Club, adopted the idea, and, with the assent of the club's golfers, this style of competition was introduced there for use in match play. During one competition Mr CA Wellman (possibly Major Charles Wellman) exclaimed to Dr Browne that, "This player of yours is a regular Bogey man". This was probably a reference to the eponymous subject of an Edwardian music hall song "Hush! Hush! Hush! Here Comes the Bogey Man", which was popular at that time. So at Yarmouth and elsewhere the ground score became known as the bogey score.

Par is derived from the stock exchange term that a stock may be above or below its normal or 'par' figure. In 1870, Mr AH Doleman, a golf writer, asked the golf professionals David Strath and James Anderson, what score would win 'The Belt', then the winning trophy for 'The Open', at Prestwick, where it was first held annually from 1861 to 1870. Strath and Anderson said that perfect play should produce a score of 49 for Prestwick's twelve holes. Mr Doleman called this 'par' for Prestwick and subsequently Young Tom Morris won with a score of two strokes 'over par' for the three rounds of 36 holes.

Although the first noted use of the word "par" in golf was in Britain and predates the bogey, today's rating system does not and the par standard was not further developed until later. It was the Ladies Golf Association, who, from 1893, began to develop a national handicapping system for women. It was largely in place by the end of the Century. The Men's association, founded in 1894, followed suit a few year's later. e24fc04721
