I would like to start decaling some of my data only cars sometime soon. I have not been able to find pictures of freight cars (the rr I want to model was bought out in about 1901) and I probably will want to revise it's history to show it still existing in either the 1920's or 1950's. So I will need to create my own lettering patterns - which has been fun. Microscale shows 2 predominant alpha/number fonts - "Railroad Roman" and "Gothic".

I BINGED (I don't google because I get swoogled) railroad fonts sometime ago and located a couple of sources. One is purchased and the other is free. Being a model railroader, I ignored the free stuff and bought them - -- NOT!

One thing I like about doing a Bing search (if you don't know this one, it's Microsoft's equivalent to Google - ), is they usually return images too. So, that search returned a ton of images of Railroad fonts.

As a result, most railroad lettering may closely resemble commercial fonts but is in fact a designed family, meaning the lettering will be individually designed and not an off-the shelf item. A graphic designer will sit down and draw logos and alphabets, and these are the property of the company. That's why matching company decal set lettering to decal alphabets is so difficult -- they are intentionally different. Sometimes you get lucky and someone will come up with a "Zephyr" or "Streamliner" alphabet sheet. But even with these there can be variations in the letters and differences in the sizes available.

Trapped in a world they never made, Comicraft's Fearless Fonts come to the rescue in the nick of time! Having dutifully lettered thousands of comic books, they save the day in video games, TV shows, movie titles and wherever fun, lively fonts are needed.

The design of traffic sign lettering itself comprises several factors. These include the shape of the letter, i.e., the letter form, and the space between letter pairs within a word. The collection of the letter forms (the shapes of each individual character) is commonly referred to as a "typeface." The specific spaces between combinations of letters within the typeface is a component of what is commonly referred to as a "font." In engineering terms, the "font" (the letter form and letter-pair spacing) is referred to as an "alphabet." Hence, the sets of standard lettering for traffic signing are referred to as the Standard Alphabets. Terminology is summarized in Table 2.1.

In addition to use on traffic signs, the Standard Alphabets are the official lettering specified by the Federal Aviation Administration for airside signing and markings on runways and taxiways, and are specified in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for lettering only, such as school buses. The Standard Alphabets are also the basis for roadway and airside pavement word markings, though in an elongated form for proper viewing on a horizontal surface from the position of a vehicle operator.

In 2008, the FHWA began to include a summary of the research within its approval letters so that agencies could understand the intended use of Clearview and its limitations. When this failed to stem noncompliant practices and misuse, the FHWA issued more detailed design and use guidance in 2011 that included illustrations of acceptable and unacceptable uses and applications. This information was distributed to the States through the FHWA Division offices and posted on the MUTCD Web site for use by anyone. This, too, failed to stem what appeared to be even more widespread misapplication of Clearview. The FHWA also continued to receive technical inquiries in which it became apparent that there was a basic lack of understanding of the limitations on the use of Clearview, particularly at the local level where many municipalities and counties were under the impression that Clearview was now required and was superior to the Standard Alphabets in any and all uses. In addition, a number of unapproved Clearview series were commercially available from the developer and distributor that would, in effect, induce agencies to misapply the Clearview lettering in unapproved applications and in applications that FHWA had since recommended it not be used.

You need a little help before using the lettering generator? No problem. In this quick guide, I will explain to you briefly the most important functions. Then you can create your own lettering right away!

You will need a modern web browser in order to use the hand lettering generator without problems (preferably the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Edge)! Also you need to select the right format for printing (landscape or portrait, depending on what you choose when designing). If it doesn't immediately work with the print preview, save your image and then print it.

If you are still looking for special quotes or words for the generator, visit my blog page with lettering quotes. There you will find great quotes, sorted by the number of words. I bet there are also many phrases that you will like.

It is finally possible to save your current letterings to work on them again later on. Just click on "Save as..." in the main menu and save your current lettering wherever you want. To start editing a saved lettering just upload it by click on "open...". No registration or login required!

Here you can find a collection of designs that you can use directly or customize to your liking. As a logged in Handlettering Generator Plus user you have the possibility to save the changes to the design in your account at any time.

Typically, I use either brush script, or a bold print. Check out my Faux Calligraphy and Brush Script tutorials for more on how to do that style of lettering. You can find more tutorials for all of these styles in my hand lettering books, Hand Lettering for Relaxation and Hand Lettering for Laughter!

This JUST started happening today. I have no idea what the hell is going on. I went to use a font on a file and it is suddenly expanding beyond the lettering I am using. I have no idea how to fix it. I have restarted my computer. I even went to another file that was previously worked on. Nothing changes. I have added screen shots for reference. If anyone has a clue as to why this started happening, PLEASE let me know!!!

Lettering is a piece of the comics industry that gets overlooked quite a bit. Beyond just the lettering that we see on the page, there is an entire world behind that page, which involves balloon placement, font choices, and other decisions that are discussed and labored over before we ever see a single letter on the page.

John Roshell has been creating lettering fonts for Comicraft for over 25 years, and has just launched Swell Type, a new company where he will continue to create new fonts for uses in comics and elsewhere. We got to chat with John about lettering, the new company, and his first font under this new label, Hyperspace Race.

Swell Type will introduce new fonts quarterly. All year long, fans can watch Roshell work through the process of bringing a font to life on Instagram and Twitter, from researching and sketching to finessing the final harmonious curves of each alphabet. SwellType.com also reveals the creative stories behind the custom fonts he has designed for video games, movie merchandise and comic-book artists alike.

I think OpenType Variable Fonts are pretty nifty. But they can include a side-effect of letter forms with overlapping parts, even a single shape overlapping on itself. See the attached image for an example. That side-effect of overlapping parts can be pretty harmful if that lettering will be sent to something like a vinyl cutting machine or computerized routing table. A knife blade or router bit will cut through material wherever a path line is present.

Side note: not all Variable Fonts have these messy overlapping parts. Acumin Pro doesn't appear to have any of those issues. TT Supermolot Variable is another example. Just out of a lucky accident I first saw these overlaps in Bahnscrift, a typeface I don't use very often at all in projects. But its appearance in outline view set off the warning alarm to be on the lookout for the same issue in any other variable fonts.

I must be missing something in my Pathfinder palette. "Trim" is one of six buttons in "Pathfinders" (along with Divide, Merge, Crop, Outline and Minus Back). I don't have an "Add" button. The four buttons in "Shape Modes" (above Pathfinders) is Unite, Minus Front, Intersect and Exclude. The "Expand" button stays grayed out regardless if I click the buttons on their own or click them along with the Alt key. I'm wondering if something is messed up with my installation. I can't seem to find anything under Preferences or any other settings to change the behavior. (Later edit: I finally remembered the "expand" button only lights up when pressing the Alt key for Pathfinder operations on two distinictly separate objects, not on a single compound object such as a compound line of lettering).

Anyway, if I select one of the "Text Overlap" objects, click the Trim Pathfinder and then click the Unite button all of the shapes fill in solid, including the counters in the "e," "O," "a," and "p" letters.
