Most PDFs prefers to use Helvetica against Arial or other default font. The problem is that aur/ephifonts have a buggy Helvetica, which defaults to Helvetica Bold - don't use that: prefer gsfonts or tex-gyre-fonts as described in the wiki.

But why would Google add system wide fonts that can not be used for styling of your TextViews? Surely there must be some way of specifying all of the Roboto fonts from within styles.xml (ie. NOT having to embed the fonts as Assets and creating custom TextViews in code) - but how?

I suggest you to use custom libraries like Android-RobotoTextView or Calligraphy.With one of these you can set the font of a view in xml with an attribute so you can put in in styles.xml . And they works with previous version of Android than 4.0

I'm currently facing strange problems with Android's font Roboto. At first I had two TextViews in one horizontal LinearLayout, centered both vertically and horizontally. The first TextView was set font Roboto-Black.ttf and the second was Roboto-Light.ttf. Both was set to textSize="12sp", but the one with Roboto-Light.ttf was just a pixel higher then the Roboto-Black.ttf TextView. But it didn't happen when I've set textSize="13sp". So I've created new Android project, just to be sure it's not only in the one application. The result is almost identical, but in this case, textSize="12sp" works as expected but textSize="13sp" doesn't. I've made screenshots to show the issue.

It would be really helpful to be able to define font stacks for Styles. Currently, if I want to use a custom font then the default sans-serif font loads first until my custom font loads and it looks terrible. If I were able to define a font stack, such as font-family: 'MyCustomFont', Open Sans, sans-serif; then I could have the initial font load be similar to my font and improve the experience significantly.

I've installed the Roboto typeface on my system but it turns out that the default, regular face is rendered as black, even though in the thumbnail it appears to be lighter. This happens on all applications, on Linux and Windows too. Here's an example:

This is how the thumbnails look on any file manager on Linux, the fonts seem fine (Windows doesn't even list the regular face on the collection). Windows only lists the normal face if I remove the black face:

But I lose my black face and the italics are still rendered with the black face, so I'd have to remove the face along with its variants. What can I do? Is symlinking removing my fonts the only solution?

The problem is that both variants of the font (regular and black) interfere with each other, and I can only have one of the two installed at a time. Is there some sort of font metadata that I could change to fix this?

I have copied fonts from google and put them into a Font file. I am trying to link them to my CSS code as below but they will not link. The text remains as default Serif. I am using Visual Studio Code editor on PC and windows.

That's interesting -- it sound like Weasyprint isn't loading the font from the link, which does surprise me a bit. However, if you download the TTF version of Roboto then you can install it into your PythonAnywhere account.

Yeah I tried that with Segoe UI as that was the default bootstrap font being used. Tried it again with the roboto ttfs, and sure enough, fc-cache -f -v gives the result /home/Kirkmania/.fonts: caching, new cache contents: 16 fonts, 0 dirs, but WeasyPrint still isn't using it. I don't know what else to do! Maybe I need to explore the WeasyPrint code and see what I can understand.

OK, that's promising -- the fonts are definitely installed where weasyprint should be able to get hold of them. Are there any warning messages appearing in your website's server or error log when you access the view?

When i am switching between scenes or when the game first loads, there is a black overlay which appears for a fraction of second. I want to change the color of this transition to white(which is now black).

Roboto font comes from Android and Google designed it really well. It looks awesome on desktops and laptops. But getting it working as a default system font in Linux is quite a task because the font package of Roboto available has multiple font forms declaring same type of text style.

No wonder Roboto was so bold! Seriously, the fontconfig developers should include these hacks in their software instead of making people write massive fonts.conf file to fix their issues (disabling hinting for Microsoft fonts at low sizes, for example)

My engine still starts up and loads the window after these warnings, but as you can see from the image below, the characters are replaced with square placeholders, because, as the warnings said, the font data could not be loaded. Also, the window can not be moved or dragged around, but the buttons at the top still work.

Four common terms used interchangeably across design are type, typeface, font, and font-family. Depending on what industry you are in and who you are speaking with, they may use one or the other. Which are very similar but have subtle differences.

Another thing to note, since the invention of desktop publishing is font also refers to the actual font files on the computer. So working within digital design people would see the word font and not typeface. In addition, many programs from that time until now use the word font. They combined the picking of a typeface and font into one action.

The font-family of Roboto would be the collection of fonts like Roboto Thin, Light, Regular, Italic and Bold. There are more fonts in Roboto that we did not mention. And not all Typefaces have all these fonts in the font-family. But the main takeaway here is that Typeface is what we see its how we identify Type and Font is the variation of Type that we use.

The type spec will communicate information like the typeface, fonts (weights), and size. Along with other information like line-height (leading) and letter-spacing (tracking). Helping to smooth out the designer to developer communication.

There are hundreds of great typefaces to choose from and if someone says font it is ok. Regardless of the typeface or font you decide just remember the main function of Typography is the readability, legibility, and the hierarchy of information in Design.

Roboto was designed entirely in-house by Christian Robertson who previously had released an expanded Ubuntu-Title font through his personal type foundry Betatype. The font was officially made available for free download on January 12, 2012, on the newly launched Android Design website.

Compared to Android's previous system font, the humanist sans-serif Droid, Roboto belongs to the neo-grotesque genre of sans-serif typefaces. It includes Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, and Black weights with matching oblique styles rather than true italics. It also includes condensed styles in Light, Regular and Bold, also with matching oblique designs.
