In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the lords of Elves, Dwarves, and Men are given Rings of Power. Unbeknownst to them, the Dark Lord Sauron forges the One Ring in Mount Doom, instilling into it a great part of his power, to dominate the other Rings and conquer Middle-earth. A final alliance of Men and Elves battles Sauron's forces in Mordor. Isildur of Gondor severs Sauron's finger and the Ring with it, thereby vanquishing Sauron and returning him to spirit form. With Sauron's first defeat, the Third Age of Middle-earth begins. The Ring's influence corrupts Isildur, who takes it for himself and is later killed by Orcs. The Ring is lost in a river for 2,500 years until it is found by Gollum, who owns it for over four and a half centuries. The Ring abandons Gollum and it is subsequently found by a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who is unaware of its history.

Weta Digital developed new technologies to allow for the groundbreaking digital effects required for the trilogy, including the development of the MASSIVE software to generate intelligent crowds for battle scenes, and advancing the art of motion capture, which was used on bipedal creatures like the Cave Troll or Gollum. The Battle for Middle-earth is a real-time strategy game. Warring factions gather resources, then use them to construct military bases and armies on-site. In The Battle for Middle-earth, buildings may only be constructed on the building slots of predefined plots. Plots range from farmhouses to full-fledged castles, with different slot arrangements and available buildings, and plots can be purchased when they're in the sole presence of a side's forces. The only resource are the nebulous "resources," which are produced inexhaustibly in dedicated buildings. Four factions on two sides wage the War of the Ring: Representing the Free Peoples are the horse-lords of Rohan, and Gondor with its forges and battlements. The Forces of Darkness are the fighting Uruk-hai of Isengard, and Mordor's orc hordes, bolstered by Haradrim, Mmakil, and Trolls.

Near Twizel in the Mackenzie Country, Peter Jackson filmed the epic battle of the Pelennor Fields, where thousands of orcs bred by Sauron clashed with the men of Gondor and Rohan. The grassy fields that stretch to the foothills of the mountains look exactly as described in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The location is on private land, however you can arrange a tour in the town of Twizel.

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where the forces of Gondor and its allies fight the forces of Sauron in front of Minas Tirith, is perhaps the most epic battle in the whole Lord of the Rings saga. One thing is for sure, it was the biggest battle in terms of how many people were on set to film it.

The final battle for Middle-earth begins. Frodo and Sam (Sean Astin), led by the mysterious Gollum (Andy Serkis), continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) struggles to fulfill his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron, so that the Ring-bearer may complete his quest. The film, which won Academy Awards in all 11 categories for which it was nominated in 2003, took wins for Best Picture, Director, Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Visual Effects, Makeup, Adapted Screenplay, Sound Mixing, Original Song and Original Score.

The third film gathers all of the plot strands and guides them toward the great battle at Minas Tirith; it is "before these walls, that the doom of our time will be decided." The city is a spectacular achievement by the special- effects artisans, who show it as part fortress, part Emerald City, topping a mountain, with a buttress reaching out over the plain below where the battle will be joined. In a scene where Gandalf rides his horse across the drawbridge and up the ramped streets of the city, it's remarkable how seamlessly Jackson is able to integrate computer-generated shots with actual full-scale shots, so they all seem of a piece.

The final battle is kind of magnificent. I found myself thinking of the visionary films of the silent era, like Lang ("Metropolis") and Murnau ("Faust"), with their desire to depict fantastic events of unimaginable size and power, and with their own cheerful reliance on visual trickery. Had they been able to see this scene, they would have been exhilarated. We see men and even an army of the dead join battle against Orcs, flying dragons, and vast lumbering elephantine creatures that serve as moving platforms for machines of war. As a flaming battering-ram challenges the gates of the city, we feel the size and weight and convincing shudder of impacts that exist only in the imagination. Enormous bestial Trolls pull back the springs for catapults to hurl boulders against the walls and towers of Minas Tirith, which fall in cascades of rubble (only to seem miraculously restored in time for a final celebration).

Instead of carrying on the long defeat in nobility and wisdom such as they had, the lords of Middle-earth were in a state of despair and hopelessness from which each took his own time in recovering. Even Arwen allowed herself briefly to forsake her oath to Aragorn and take, for a time, the road toward the Havens and escape. Except perhaps Galadriel, there were none who held a noble head in purpose and resolve against the Dark Lord at the beginning of the films. This was most likely done in order to add tension to the movies.

One other way in which the Elves resisted Sauron to great effect was by the power of the rings that they bore. When Sauron first took up the Ruling Ring and uttered the accursed incantation, he was unmasked to the Elves, and they immediately removed the rings that they wore and thus prevented him from bringing them under his dominion. When the Ruling Ring was lost, the Elves again took up their rings and used them to heal the hurts of the world and, eventually, to resist the dark power as it slowly regained its former strength. Although the power of the Elvish rings was tied to that of the One, they gladly would work toward its destruction and in so doing accept the loss of their own. Of the rings of the Elf-lords, Elrond stated at the Council, "They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power....But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One. It would be better if the Three had never been. That is his purpose." The might of the Elves to resist Sauron by the power of the Three Rings was great when they were wielded in strength of purpose. In the screenplay, the only one of the Three that was revealed in any detail was Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, which was worn by Galadriel. While it is true that Gandalf is seen wearing Narya in the Grey Havens, it is seen in passing only, and its importance is not stated.

For reasons that are not clarified in the film (presumably as breaking the One Ring would break the power of the other great rings into which Elves have imbued themselves, but this is not explicit), the fate of Arwen is tied to the Ring in the movies as she decides mortality over eternal life. Why this is so is never explained, though it might be possible that she tied her destiny to the Ring's when she saved Frodo, saying, "What grace is given to me, let it pass on to him." It is most likely that the actual quote from Elrond "Arwen's life is now tied to the fate of the Ring" does not imply a connection with the Ring, but means something quite simple. Since the fate of the free peoples in Middle-Earth rests on the destruction of the ring, Elrond's statement simply refers to the fact that Arwen's fate will be the same, due to her decision to stay. While Arwen seldom makes an appearance in the books, she makes a much more influential appearance and power in the films, such as a brief vision of her son Eldarion. Unlike her father and most other characters, Arwen also appears to hold more hope.

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is where the forces of Gondor and their allies fight Saurons army in front of Minas Tirith. It is perhaps the most epic battle scene in the entire Lord of the Rings saga. The battle was filmed on the fields surrounding the small town of Twizel, and involved over 1700 people on set, having almost everyone living in the town as extras.

3) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: This was the movie that made the most money, and won all of the Oscars, and generally settled into conventional wisdom as the "best" of the original trilogy.
