i see now what is the problem. anyone having the problem run dxdiag, there is info about actual directx (which i have 11) but as Shadow says about shader model, it seems that Virtual box supports only some of version 9, while the regular pc has level 11.

dxdiag says I have directx 12 installed. But some video games I want to play use directx 8 and 9 and the cd rom comes with the directx installer for the old versions. But if it did get installed, how do I check if the old versions have been installed?

I did the same thing. Copied all my files to the new drive, but after I got the directx issue straighten out FSX would stop working when I tried to load the program. I had to delete everything and start from scratch, which meant reinstalling steam ... then it took 9 hours to install FSX ... I don't recall it taking that long when I first install it. But unfortunately you have to start all over again.

I just installed City of Heroes: Homecoming and when I press the play button it cannot seem to find my version of direct x. I have version 12 installed but I get an error saying that I need directx 8 or higher. Any ideas? I am running windows 10 fully updated. Graphics card is gtx1050ti. I initially installed onto my d: drive but have also moved over to my c: drive and performed a file verify and still get the same error.

That did not work. It detected a newer version of directx and will not install. I am going to try manually resetting the version in the registry back to an older version to get it to install then run windows update again to reinstall version 12 and see if that works. Will let you know the results.

I have tried a couple of methods I found to install directx 9 along side directx 12. CoH still does not recognize directx being installed. The file I tried to install is directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. It seemed to do its thing and I installed from the dxsetup it unpacked in the tmp folder I setup for it. I also went into legacy features and enabled direct play. Still no luck. Any other ideas? Or should I try a virtual machine and run it in that?

I figured it out. It was the fact that i was using a usb mouse. A trackball to be exact. Anyway I plugged in an old ps2 mouse and just left it sitting on the back of the pc and everything works great. The trackball works fine it, just was not being detected by the direct input and caused the error messages. I also got the direct input messages but figured it was a problem with directx. turns out it just could not find the mouse.

In terms of offering a hardware independent access to the latest, greatest GPU features directx has an advantage. You can achieve the same with OpenGL using extensions. However each major hardware vendor has different extensions thus coding is a little more complex. OpenGL 2.0 does/will make life a little easier.

I have the same problem, chosing directx 11 instead of the legacy version fix the problem for me, but the FPS are terrible, i created a post on latam forums but i got no solution for now, hope they fix it

I have the same issue with my installation. If I was not using my machine to run my Oracle databases test environment, I would already installed another linux distro, because it seems that no one cares. As stated by other users, directx12 works fine on other linux distributions, the issue is Fedora related.
