Every modern web browser includes a powerful suite of developer tools. These tools do a range of things, from inspecting currently-loaded HTML, CSS and JavaScript to showing which assets the page has requested and how long they took to load. This article explains how to use the basic functions of your browser's devtools.

The developer tools usually open by default to the inspector, which looks something like the following screenshot. This tool shows what the HTML on your page looks like at runtime, as well as what CSS is applied to each element on the page. It also allows you to instantly modify the HTML and CSS and see the results of your changes reflected live in the browser viewport.

Chrome Developer Tools is a comprehensive toolkit for developers, built directly into the Chrome browser. These tools let you edit web pages in real time, diagnose problems more quickly, and build better websites faster.

The Developer Tools is meant for all (not just for the developers) to quickly try out things - like calling services, updating states, raising events, and publishing messages in MQTT). It is also a necessary tool for those who write custom automations and scripts by hand. The following describes each of the sections in detail.

I am constantly fed up by something new in Firefox and immediately force myself back into Chrome, but it is always the developer tools in Chrome that keep me from using it for an extended period of time.

I would have expected this to be under the devtools area where it was before, or more conveniently if it had to be removed from devtools I would expect a better place would have been under the Supervisor area they could have added a listener/publisher tab there. That would have been somewhat intuitive at least.

The built-in MQTT tools were moved out of Developer Tools (many versions ago) because their presence only makes sense if the MQTT integration is installed. Accordingly, they were moved to the MQTT integration.

This is currently possible using something balloob supplied here:

Why the heck, is the log not in the developers tab Month of "What the heck?!" You can use the redirect panel to add shortcuts to places in the UI to the sidebar

I use Brave as my main browser, even for web development, and as the title says, when I try to disable JS on the developer tools, this action has no effect. JS keeps running and the content inside tags is never rendered.

I hoped in the developer tools on internet explorer at work and it would only run when you hit the play button and hitting enter took you to the next line. this is how it should be. but on chrome and firefox enter will run the code instead of going to the next line. its very annoying to forget to hit shift enter and run the code and then have a long as history list have code because of my forgetfulness

The Visual Studio IDE is a creative launching pad that you can use to edit, debug, and build code, and then publish an app. Over and above the standard editor and debugger that most IDEs provide, Visual Studio includes compilers, code completion tools, graphical designers, and many more features to enhance the software development process.

Extensions are a great way to add more functionality on demand without adding overhead to the main product. They allow us to move fast and iterate based on the feedback of our users, and were a natural choice to bring the Microsoft Edge tools to VS Code.

I was unable to find the shortcut to open the Web-Dev tools, but going to the menu (the cog-like button on the right) and click inspect page. Then it will open a window, which is exactly like chrome/chromium's one (DOH, ITS WEBKIT-BASED!).

If the documentation on this page seems light for developer tools, that's because all the documentation for the webhook events and REST API URLs can be found in the plugin's interface. The interface will actually give you dynamic results to work from and the ability to test webhooks directly from your site. You may also refer to the following additional docs for more info:

Web development tools (often called devtools or inspect element) allow web developers to test and debug their source code. They are different from website builders and integrated development environments (IDEs) in that they do not assist in the direct creation of a webpage, rather they are tools used for testing the user interface of a website or web application.

Web development tools come as browser add-ons or built-in features in modern web browsers.[1] Browsers such as Google Chrome,[2] Firefox,[3] Internet Explorer, Safari,[4] Microsoft Edge[5] and Opera,[6] have built-in tools to help web developers,[7] and many additional add-ons can be found in their respective plugin download centers.

Web development tools allow developers to work with a variety of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, the DOM, JavaScript, and other components that are handled by the web browser. Due to increasing demand from web browsers to do more,[8][failed verification] popular web browsers have included more features geared for developers.[9]

Several notable web browsers have support for web developer tools that allow web designers and developers to look at the make-up of their pages. These are all tools that are built into the browser and do not require additional modules or configuration.

The built-in web developer tools in the browser are commonly accessed by hovering over an item on a webpage and selecting the "Inspect Element" or similar option from the context menu. Alternatively the F12 key tends to be another common shortcut.[18]

HTML and DOM viewer and editor is commonly included in the built-in web development tools. The difference between the HTML and DOM viewer, and the view source feature in web browsers is that the HTML and DOM viewer allows you to see the DOM as it was rendered in addition to allowing you to make changes to the HTML and DOM and see the change reflected in the page after the change is made.[19]

Web pages typically load and require additional content in the form of images, scripts, font and other external files. Web development tools also allow developers to inspect resources that are loaded and available on the web page in a tree-structure listing, and the appearance of style sheets can be tested in real time.[23][24]

Web development tools also allow developers to view information about the network usage, such as viewing what the loading time and bandwidth usage are and which HTTP headers are being sent and received.[25]

Profiling allows developers to capture information about the performance of a web page or web application. With this information developers can improve the performance of their scripts. Auditing features may provide developers suggestions, after analyzing a page, for optimizations to decrease page load time and increase responsiveness. Web development tools typically also provide a record of the time it takes to render the page, memory usage, and the types of events which are taking place.[26][27]

JavaScript is commonly used in web browsers. Web development tools commonly include a panel to debug scripts by allowing developers to add watch expressions, breakpoints, view the call stack, and pause, step over, step into, and step out of functions while debugging JavaScript.

A JavaScript console is commonly included. The consoles allow developers to type in JavaScript commands and call functions, or view errors that may have been encountered during the execution of a script.[29][30][31]

Firefox is the only browser with tools built specifically for building and designing with CSS Grid. These tools allow you to visualize the grid, display associated area names, preview transformations on the grid and much more.

The new fonts panel in Firefox DevTools gives developers quick access to all of the information they need about the fonts being used in an element. It also includes valuable information such as the font source, weight, style and more. e24fc04721
