Driving simulators are available for S4SD participating schools. The simulators present real-world driving challenges for new teen drivers, including distracted driving situations, texting while driving, and making split-second traffic safety decisions.

The simulators can be set up so teens can "drive" one of the scenarios while an instructor introduces "distractions." Scenarios take about ten minutes per driver. Some simulators can project onto a screen so more students can view at one time.

Introduction:  The role of cannabis consumption in traffic crashes is unclear and the causal link between cannabis and collisions is still to be demonstrated. While cannabis use is very likely to impair driving ability, there is as yet no overwhelming evidence that cannabis use in isolation contributes more to collisions than other characteristics inherent to cannabis users. As noted in a growing body of literature, individuals driving under the influence of cannabis (DUIC) seem to exhibit a general reckless driving style putting them at higher risk to be involved in traffic crashes.

Method:  This study aims at investigating the relationship between self-reported DUIC and reckless driving by means of self-reported measures and direct observations made in a driving simulator. Participants (n=72) were required to be between 18 and 25 years of age, to hold a valid driver's license, and to drive at least twice a week. They completed standard driving simulation tasks recreating everyday on-road trivial conditions.

Results:  Results show that people admitting that they commit more real-life dangerous driving behaviors reached higher maximum speed and demonstrated more reckless driving behaviors on the driving simulation tasks. Self-reported DUIC is associated with a risky driving style including a broad range of reckless on-road behaviors and support the problem driving behavior theory. Moreover, beyond confounding factors, both self-report DUIC and observed dangerous behaviors are associated with real-life traffic violations.

Practical applications:  Since DUIC appears to be related to an overall reckless style of driving, it is proposed that public safety policies should be more holistic, simultaneously targeting multiple on-road dangerous behaviors for intervention.

During the week-long campaign, police will use both marked and unmarked vehicles to catch motorists using mobiles to make calls, text or browse the internet; offenders will be given the chance to attend an educational course as an alternative to prosecution.

Between 2013 and 2015, a total of 7,713 drivers in the West Midlands were prosecuted for driving while using a mobile phone.

Inspector Sion Hathaway from CMPG said: The simulator is a great bit of kit and a fantastic example of partnership working: the car was donated by Land Rover, Wolverhampton University made the TV stands, and local companies contributed to software and signage.

The Nebraska State Patrol Community Policing Services is a partnership between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. Community Policing focuses on problem identification and solving. Troopers assigned to provide Community Policing Services work closely with schools, businesses, organizations and groups to focus on fatality reduction efforts and crime prevention.

ROLLOVER SIMULATOR

The Nebraska State Patrol has six Rollover Simulators available for demonstrations. Rollover Simulators vividly depict what happens when you don't wear your seat belt and are involved in a rollover collision. The simulator rolls at up to 30 miles per hour. Inside the cab of the pickup are a life size adult mannequin and a child size mannequin. The demonstration is excellent for school groups as well as businesses.

SEAT BELT CONVINCER

The Nebraska has six Seat Belt Convincers available for demonstrations. The Seat Belt Convincer is an interactive tool used by the agency to demonstrate the importance of seat belt use. The participant rides the Seat Belt Convincer to experience a low impact crash. Through this low impact crash the participant is shown how the seat belt, when worn properly, save lives and helps prevent serious injury.

DRIVING SIMULATOR

The Nebraska State Patrol has one Driving Simulator. The Driving Simulator utilizes LCD computer screens to provide users with realistic driving scenarios that not only test their driving skills, but draw attention to the complex thought process required for safe driving.

The Criminal Justice Program provides students with an understanding of the criminal justice system through scientific theories, field studies, research methods, and the sociological study of crime, criminal behavior, and the policies and systems designed to control criminality. It offers students from various social, racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds a strong base for academic excellence, spiritual growth, and successful career development.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Chein and Steinberg looked at brain activity in adolescents, young adults and adults as they made decisions in a simulated driving game. The goal of the game was to reach the end of a track as quickly as possible in order to maximize a monetary reward. Participants were forced to make a decision about whether to stop at a yellow light when they came to a given intersection or run through the intersection and risk colliding with another vehicle.

Our facilities include an indoor firearms range, two firearms simulation laser shooting systems, fully equipped patrol cars, an indoor driving simulator, a mobile crime scene investigation vehicle, and a simulated apartment used for law enforcement and crime scene investigation practicals.

Indiana's Graduated Driver Licensing Law (GDL) is one action toward reducing teen crashes. Under the GDL, a young driver is exposed to driving experiences gradually while under supervision, with limited night time driving, limited passengers in the vehicle under the age of 21, and an increased age of acquisition. Studies have shown that a strong GDL, supported by parents and caregivers, reduces the incidence of teen driver crashes. Teen Driver Safety Week is also observed each October. In Indiana, organizations like Indiana Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) are getting involved by hosting events across the state that speak directly to young drivers about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute conducts outreach and education for young drivers using our anti-texting and driving simulator and an all day event entitled "Rule the Road." During a Rule the Road event, young drivers can experience certain common driving hazards and conditions under the supervision of trained emergency driving instructors.
