Literary analysis is different than craft analysis: they can overlap, but they are meant to be distinct. Craft analysis is designed to discover the specific ways a writer creates a certain literary element, such as tone or voice. One can study the way tone affects a story, but that is a literary analysis of tone. Studying the ways punctuation and sentencing create tone is a craft analysis. Remember that you are reading these pieces as writers.

Next Steps:

I assign several examples of craft papers to start a conversation about the many different ways there are to write craft papers. Yes, craft papers require different muscles, but there is no one right way to write them. This semester, I chose these:

Putting the Puzzle Together: The Research

I require as part of the proposal process both a preliminary outline and a preliminary annotated bibliography, so I can see the direction the writer intends to take their craft paper and suggest ways to fill the cracks and holes I see. The main issues I have encountered include a lack of diversity among the primary texts and this is not acceptable to me in graduate level work, so if the reading list is primarily white or primarily male, I require revisions.

The reality is that nonfiction writers who are writing craft papers must be creative in finding and extrapolating from secondary texts, because the work we have to draw on is thin. This also presents an excellent opportunity for our work beyond program requirements. You might do some research into race theory, or neurobiology, or cultural criticism to make your point.

Karen, thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I am just beginning to put together a craft paper for a final project and sorely needed some initial direction. This has clarified my thinking in so many ways and I am now eager to get started.

Sack kraft paper (or just sack paper) is a porous kraft paper with high elasticity and high tear resistance, designed for packaging products with high demands for strength and durability.[2]

Pulp produced by the kraft process is stronger than that made by other pulping processes; acidic sulfite processes degrade cellulose more, leading to weaker fibers, and mechanical pulping processes leave most of the lignin with the fibers, whereas kraft pulping removes most of the lignin present originally in the wood. Low lignin is important to the resulting strength of the paper, as the hydrophobic nature of lignin interferes with the formation of the hydrogen bonds between cellulose (and hemicellulose) in the fibers.[3]

Kraft pulp is darker than other wood pulps, but it can be bleached to make very white pulp. Fully bleached kraft pulp is used to make high quality paper where strength, whiteness, and resistance to yellowing are important.

Wood pulp for sack paper is made from softwood by the kraft process. The long fibers provide the paper its strength and wet strength chemicals are added to even further improve the strength. Both white and brown grades are made. Sack paper is then produced on a paper machine from the wood pulp. The paper is microcrepped to give porosity and elasticity. Microcrepping is done by drying with loose draws allowing it to shrink. This causes the paper to elongate 4% in the machine direction and 10% in the cross direction without breaking.[2] Machine direction elongation can be further improved by pressing between very elastic cylinders causing more microcrepping.[2] The paper may be coated with polyethylene (PE) to ensure an effective barrier against moisture, grease and bacteria, although recyclability is hindered. Zein coatings are also water resistant but allow better recyclability.[4]

I picked it up. I put it down. I picked it up again. I turned it over. I debated the pros and cons about putting it in my cart. Because, quite honestly, I had no plans for black and white graphic paper in hounds-tooth and polka dots and stripes and chevrons.

For the final step, glue two feet, two eyes, and a beak. You can choose any color paper you like to get different looks for your owl. You can also use wiggly eyes over paper eyes, but I love how these yellow eyes are over-sized with small black pupils. It gives a cartoon appearance to my funky owl!

The word Craft by definition is "An activity involving skill in making things by hand." Craft refers to the act of crafting something and therefore craft paper is not actually the correct spelling. The word kraft, on the other hand, has german origins and means strength. It refers to the particular type of paper and it's strength properties. Kraft Paper is actually much stronger than normal paper due to its manufacturing process - more on this soon.

Like all paper, Kraft Paper is made from wood which is a renewable natural resource. The paper is made using the Kraft Process which involves converting wood into wood pulp. Lignin and cellulose are the two structural components in wood but due to the fact lignin doesn't make good paper it must be separated from the cellulose using a cooking process. This leaves the wood pulp which is screened to remove large pieces and can then be formed into various paper products.

The kraft process if different from standard wood pulping processes because of the way it strips away more lignin, leaving more cellulose which is stronger than lignin and results in stronger paper. Hence the use of the german word for strength - kraft.

Kraft paper comes in a variety of colors and finishes, including glossy, matte, and laminated. Depending on the application, different types of kraft paper may be used, such as Kraft paper, butcher paper, crepe paper, and wax paper. Kraft paper is a heavy-duty paper that is often used for shipping, wrapping, and packaging. It is also used in arts and crafts projects, as well as in bookbinding and other creative endeavors.

Kraft paper is made from wood pulp and is generally brown in color, although it can also be bleached or dyed. Butcher paper is a type of Kraft paper that is usually white in color and is often used in butcher shops to wrap meats and cheeses. Crepe paper is a type of tissue paper that is usually crinkled and used to decorate walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. Wax paper is a thin paper that is coated with wax and is often used for wrapping foods, such as sandwiches and baked goods.

Another common confusion, much like the craft paper/kraft paper confusion, is that butches paper and kraft paper are the same thing. Kraft paper and butchers paper actually begin life as the same material. They share the same kraft process (spoken about earlier) to create the wood pulp. The true difference is in how the paper is finished. Butchers paper has added treatments to strengthen it for food-grade use. It is specifically engineered to withstand moisture better than Kraft Paper.

Butcher paper is a thicker, more fibrous paper than Kraft paper. It is usually used for wrapping and packing meat and other large items. It is also sometimes used for craft projects and for wrapping large gifts. Butcher paper is affordable, water-resistant, and provides excellent protection for the goods it is used to wrap.

Kraft paper is a bit thinner than butcher paper and is commonly used for wrapping sandwiches, baked goods, and other small items. It is also used as an alternative to plastic wrap in restaurants and food service establishments. Kraft paper is lightweight and cost-effective, making it a great choice for wrapping food items.

We use kraft paper in both our studio roller and daily roller products. The Studio Roller is great for advertising daily specials as a menu board in a business settings, as an at-home wall pad for writing to-do lists, or in your office for brainstorming instead of a white-board. The Studio Roller is a beautiful writing board for your space.

Our favorite uses for kraft paper and our Studio and Daily Rollers include a place to write lists, daily specials, and brainstorm ideas. However, here's a couple of alternate ways to use kraft paper and a roller.
