Last week iOS 12.1 came out and immediately some people were keen to add the ? Nazar Amulet to their Twitter names. Sadly for those people, this emoji has now been added to the list of emojis banned from use in Twitter names.

The list doesn't end there. Four lock-related emojis are banned too. Twitter uses a lock icon to indicate private accounts on the platform. To avoid confusion with these, the following emojis also aren't allowed in names or bios:

On Feb. 26, 2023, a viral tweet claimed Twitter was banning users from using the Ukrainian flag emoji unless they paid for a "Twitter Blue" checkmark. The tweet was authored by @walter_report and included a screenshot of what was supposedly a notification to users about the change, reading: "Has anyone else gotten this popup yet or is it only us?"

Only Twitter Blue subscribers can visibly support Ukraine. It'll just take a few minutes to remove it. We tested the claim by trying to post the Ukrainian flag emoji on our private Twitter accounts that do not subscribe to Twitter Blue, an "opt-in, paid subscription that adds a blue checkmark to your account and offers early access to select features, like Edit Tweet" for a price of $8 monthly or $84 annually. We were able to tweet the emoji without a problem.

While Twitter's guidelines do prohibit certain types of content, they do not ban anyone from posting about (or sharing the emoji for) the national flag of any country. Guidelines prohibit users from using violent or hateful speech, as well as promoting or encouraging suicide or self harm, child sexual exploitation, adult content, and more. Those violations are subject to a range of consequences, including suspension.

Hours after the initial tweet about Twitter supposedly censoring the Ukrainian flag, @walter_report backtracked, telling its followers that the change wasn't actually happening. "Twitter is NOT banning the [Ukrainian flag emoji]... yet," @Walter_report stated.

It was also debunked by fact-checkers. BBC journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh tweeted, "It is not true that Twitter is asking users who don't subscribe to Twitter Blue to remove Ukraine's flag from their tweets and profiles, and the supposed screenshot of the request by Twitter in the tweet is clearly fake."

Given that users with or without the "Twitter Blue" status were able to use the Ukrainian flag emoji as of this writing, and the apparent source of the rumor about the alleged policy change said it wasn't actually happening, we rate this claim as "False."

Today I went to send a text message to someone and as I was selecting the person from my contact list I noticed that one 1 of my contacts had a tiny blue speech bubble next to his name. I know that the blue speech bubbles when texting mean that you are using iMessage, but I don't know why this little icon appeared next to this contact's name. And why it would show up only next to his name and not next to any others' who have iMessage enabled. Any ideas what this symbol means?

I've read a lot of conflicting info re that tiny empty blue text bubble icon next to a contact - including the contributions above. My wife has a Blackberry (so no iMessage) and my son a Samsung/Android (so no iMessage), but both have the empty blue text bubble icon next to the telephone icon in their contact information in my iPhone. So the bubble has nothing to do with iMessage.

The little blue speech bubble became apparent to me after I was interrupted while typing a text message with a second text message. After responding to the second message, my original text was gone. Then, when I searched for the persons name to begin again, I noticed their name had a small blue speech bubble next to it, as if iMessage was trying to tell me there was a draft, or unsent message, waiting. I was unable to recover the original message, however, and had to start again. I restarted iMessage just to see what would happen and the bubble went away.

I then checked my contacts and found one where I knew that they had an iPhone. There was no speech bubble, so I sent an imessage and then it appeared (she has a iPhone 4 and I have a 4s, so it doesn't matter the version).

Here's the answer: the tiny blue speech bubble appears if two conditions are met. First condition, the person has an iPhone and their iMessage capabilities are set up. And the second condition, the blue speech bubble appears, if YOU the texter, never officially terminated (stopped the message app from running in the background) the message app in that texting session.

How I tested this was to text myself. When I texted myself & went to start a new message (w myself) the tiny bubble appeared. So I erased the message. And started again, the same thing happened, tiny blue speech bubble was there. However when I terminated the app completely and then begin to once again send myself a message, the tiny blue speech bubble next to my name was GONE.
