We gave some to the very friendly folks at our wonderful hotel (we actually LOVED our hotel AJ Kouki) but we gave the bulk of them to Manahu Higa, the owner of our favorite restaurant Island Marine Cafe & Bar. His whole restaurant was decorated in local shell art and crafts that his wife and daughter made. We loved it!

The Gili Islands are technically part of Lombok but you can easily reach them from Bali as well. The diving is not the best in Indonesia but a wonderful option for those who love warm water, are new to diving, or are into turtles. After all, the Gilis are considered the Turtle Capital of the World!
Once, a long time ago, there was a direct flight from Los Angeles to Biak and lots of tourist came to visit the beautiful coral atoll of the Padaido Islands. After the Indonesian government made the decision to steer tourism to Bali, Biak became completely forgotten. Now it is very hard to get to this remote place of Papua and there are very limited information online. Only a few foreign tourists make it to Biak, which makes it the perfect location for superb diving and enjoying wonderful, authentic Papua.
The Padaido Atoll is an untouched group of islands as beautiful as you can imagine. There are no resorts or hotels just little local villages. If you want to experience real island life in Papua as well as superb diving this is your place to go.
Divemaster Erik Fares is living with his family on Pulau Wundi and has a little dive centre on the island. You can live in his house and totally unwind. The Padaido Islands offer many outstanding dive sites. Erik has 30 years of experience of diving in the area and will bring you to the most beautiful dive sites and islands. It was also the first time for us we diving a cave. Wundi cave looks so magical under water it will blow your mind. We also encountered a huge school of barracudas at barracuda point as well as huge dog tooth tuna which was following us during the whole dive. We saw reef sharks on every dive and in one dive, we saw four manta rays swimming away from the atoll. Erik is a very kind person and has always a smile on his face. We loved to stay and dive with him.

Put simply, Jordan was life-changing. The beauty of the Arabic language and my interest in the region grew stronger by living there. I am now in graduate school studying foreign policy rhetoric to learn more about how we can build bridges of understanding between our regions, religions and cultures. More importantly, my time there taught me that Jesus truly does love all the little children--and big adults, for that matter--of the world.
My year in Scotland transformed me. It allowed me to connect with my supervisor, a British physician who was largely vested in the improvement of the National Health Service in Scotland, for my research project. I joined the Chronic Disease Group as a graduate research student and conducted a retrospective cohort study to show the correlation of moderate chronic kidney disease and hip fractures. I know it sounds boring, but talking about the differences between the British and American healthcare systems with her and using the NHS when I got sick while concurrently learning about changes in several healthcare systems in my graduate courses offered me a perspective of medicine on a global scale. These experiences gave me a passion that is the relentless driving force behind my continuing quest into healthcare. I plan on being a family physician.
Winning a Fulbright to the United Kingdom is one of the highlights of my life. I believe I left a piece of my heart in Scotland. The friends that I made have become some of the most important people in my life through shared experiences and mutual love and respect for one another. In fact, I traveled to Portugal in March to spend some time with a friend that I made while in Scotland, and then reunited with many friends at a "Fulbright wedding," the first of many weddings from my cohort of American scholars to the United Kingdom. The best moments in our lives become the best memories that we have. Knowing that many of these moments are memories that I get to share with friends who I have come to love most makes me incredibly happy.
