It turns on automatically at 20% battery and in Android 13, it would half the frame rate of all of the animations. It sucked having to use the phone under 20% because it felt like using a slow & laggy phone.

It seems in Android 14 they've reworked battery saver to not cut the frame rate of the animations in half, it simply runs less tasks in the background and darkens your wallpaper, with the frame rate stuff being moved to extreme battery saver which asks you first if you'd like to turn it on at 10% battery.

I have a Google Pixel 4a 5G, and I love the Android 11 battery saver, which gives me over a day and a half of battery life with normal usage. I know that 5G uses a bit more battery than LTE, so the battery saver mode limits usage to LTE. I've looked around for settings and other tweaks, but I think Tasker is going to be the only option if I want to enable 5G while keeping the other battery saving features that the Android battery saver mode offers. Has anyone tried this?

I can check with her if she can just choose an alternate 'default' level and give her access and then take it away again I suppose. I think it was just because she wanted to preserve her battery life and reduce the need to charge her phone as often.

You are trying to make changes at a system level by creating an option that doesn't exist (always use battery saver mode), whereas other answers that you quoted in comments were only invoking existing options under some conditions). Hence, what you are left with is the option of making battery saver more effective by clubbing it with other options like doze etc.

Buoy also enables something called "sticky" low power mode. Usually, when the device is plugged in and unplugged, the low power mode is then disabled. However, sticky mode re-applies low power mode afterwards to continue saving battery.

Its basically like you said. If battery optimizations are enabled, Android may kill the app if its not in use. Opening the app manually will start it again. Triggering wifi/charging conditions should also start it again (though I have never really tested this).

Keeping CPU awake or running in foreground are useful if disabling battery optimizations is not enough, and the app is killed anyway. I suggest you only enable those options if you need them, as they may cause extra battery usage.

it takes me 7 taps and 2 swipes to switch on the batter saver and get the phone back to the state it was otherwise previously in, so with the Settings app swiped away and the main menu returned to. this is on a fairphone 2.

my S20 automatically switches from optimised mode to medium battery saver. this is annoying as it disables an important background app. it seems to happen at about 70% charge so absolutely unnecessary.

no, i have found the cause now. there was a bixby routine, created by default by the system called "save battery at night", which doesn't actually have any time based criteria so was coming on when my phone considered itself to be "sleeping" which seems to just mean being idle. i've added a time restriction so that it matches its name and so far that seems to have solved my issue.
