I just configured and purchased my new Precision 7560 laptop. It was a bit cheaper as it's more or less new-old-stock, so the price I paid was a bit less, so I'm pretty happy about that. It's got all the specs of what I'm looking for so I'm very much looking forward to it to say the least.... HOWEVER....
The keyboard is non-backlit. (booooooo). If there's one feature I love on laptops and find very helpful when sitting on the couch at night is the backlight on the keys. I knew going into this that it wasn't backlit, but I made that sacrifice for the better price.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to purchase a replacement keyboard that IS backlight for this workstation laptop? I understand that the mobo may be different to facilitate a slot for the power ribbon of the backlit keyboard, but I understand it's possible on some Dell models as the mobo's will all be the same. Does anyone know if that's the case here or not?
It is likely that the motherboard is the same, whether the system was shipped with optional backlit keyboard or not. In other Dell laptops I've opened, even those that shipped without backlit keyboard still had the required connector on the motherboard, if backlit keyboard was an option for that model.
If you decide to do this, follow the disassembly and reassembly steps in Dell's Service Manual.
Look on YouTube for videos showing disassembly of your model. But, be cautious with them, as some use steps or methods that are not appropriate. Use the videos to add to your understanding of what to do, but follow the steps in Dell's manual.
Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard.
Just reporting back. I've just acquired and installed a BACKLIT keyboard for my Dell Precision 7560. I've done all the updates I could find and checked all BIOS settings and..... no backlight functionality. Does anyone perhaps know if I am overlooking some setting somewhere?
When I opened the machine, there was indeed a slot for the backlight. It was even labeled "BACKLIGHT". I know I installed it properly as I checked and doublechecked my work. I'm no stranger to tiny ribbon cables.
So.... is that it? Is there any other avenue I can explore that will get this backlight to work? I must say I'm a bit heartbroken. I have this machine that I LOVE, but one of my most loved features doesn't work.
Look on your function keys (F1 through F12). Do you see one with a sort of lightbulb icon or something that could represent light? Try pressing that key while depressing the Fn key. Try each function key with Fn. For example, on my Dell laptop pressing F6 key plus the Fn key will toggle the keyboard backlight on/off. Some BIOS have an option to enable/disable backlight, though you said you checked your BIOS.
I picked up Dell precision 7560 around the same time as you ... with no option for backlit keyboard. I was finally able to find an OEM keyboard without price gouging, delivered and I installed yesterday 3/10. Keyboard initially would light up on boot prior to OS load for a few seconds and not thereafter. I had to enable backlit functionality in the BIOS and set ac/dc timeouts and now all good. Backlit options were not in BIOS prior to me installing keyboard. Tiny ribbon cables are too tiny for me these days and I use a stand with magnifying glass and light to ensure I connected ribbon correctly.
Yunno, one thing I did NOT check - is if the keyboard I got was an OEM. It's not. They're out of stock everywhere, but I found a company called MyFixGuide.com that claims they have new "pulled" keyboards which I imagine means that they remove them from existing units. I already ordered one, and I'm going to try one of those and at the same time keep an eye out for an OEM on eBay. I pretty much had given up after I installed this aftermarket one and it didn't work. Even the CAPS LOCK key light doesn't work.
Keyboard was actually marketed as open box "Gray" and from ebay but manufactured by Chicony Electronics CO. ... which manufactures DELL OEM keyboards out of Taiwan. For the moment, I am calling it a win and $26.80 well spent. Sold by laptopandcomputerpartssolutions
Well after all the hub-bub. I finally have backlit keyboard! I was able to source a pretty much like-new OEM Dell backlit keyboard from one of the online computer replacement parts outlets... MyFixGuide.com I believe it was.
Same scenario here, I just bought a Precision 7760 off lease for an incredibly good price (well relatively good price) considering the cost of new. Anyway, it also came with an non lit keyboard. I can't understand why these higher end (and price) computers come without something as basic and convenient as a back lit keyboard in the first place. Like the price difference between a non back lit and a back lit key board itself is nothing when compared with the over-all price of the computer
But as to the question....yes it can be upgraded. I just bought an oem back lit keyboard from Dell and spent about an hour installing it. The mobo already had the receptacle (which is labelled "lighting") in it for the back lit ribbon from the new keyboard to plug into. For me, it was strictly and fortunately plug-and-play. It functioned right away, no updating drivers or BIOS or anything. There's you-tube video's out there showing how to do it. The video I referenced I believe was for a 7560 as I couldn't fine one for my 7760. The keyboard was about $55 delivered.
